You just need to download the driver from the HP site. If you go into the Hardware listing in Control Panel you should be able to locate the wireless chipset name, with which you can locate the driver on the HP site.

HP..it's most likely an Intel PRO wireless adapter; check this page: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-010623.htm
Install the driver, then proceed to configure the network connection.

Some laptops have an actual switch to turn the radio off and on as well either on the side or front of the chassis. If the drivers are installed and it still isn't working, check for the switch.

In contemporary HP/Compaq laptops, the switch is a touch sensor which has the blue led light wireless icon in it. I think OP knows about it: Quote:
its a HP and has a touch sensor above the key surface that would glow blue when it was working
I assume he tried switching wireless on using the sensor before opening this thread... Judging by the reinstall, it's most likely a driver issue. XP has no native support for the Intel 3945 chipset which is probably in that laptop.

Man, you need to install a couple of drivers. It's probably one of the 'unknown devices'. Apart from the w-lan driver, you also need to install: - gpu/graphics card driver - sound card driver - fingerprint scanner driver (if you need it; it's ok to keep it disabled/uninstalled otherwise) - generic Intel chipset driver - modem driver (again, if you need it).
Drivers can be found on hp.com website, using the model number of your laptop as the key to locate the right ones. Good luck.

Well, he comes from XP, so that shouldn't make that much of a difference. I just don't see the point in upgrading your OS because you have to install a driver or two It's not exactly rocket science, especially in this case.

No, it ultimately isn't a very hard thing to do, but Win7 >>>>>>> XP. I can't believe people still use XP, so outdated. There are so many nice features of Win7, not to mention the UI is 100x nicer.

there's pro's and con's to both operating systems. overall i still like xp better, the only things i like about windows 7 are the DX11, more memory, and...i can't really think of much more. When crysis 2 comes out that will prolly be my breaking point, but windows 7 is so fucking annoying to me tho. I really hate the gay icons, the program list, ect ect. Xp is still lighter weight, and seems faster to me for daily use. and honestly windows 7 has to many girly features to sort out, id rather not spend 6 months trying to turn it back into windows xp just because they wanted it to look pretty for women.
and lets not forget the police features they added to windows 7, all the DRM and file protections, along with "certified" microsoft drivers....might as well call your computer an xbox 1080
