There is a great dialogue in the book about just that.
A shaman is living on the edge of a town that is completely poverty stricken.
His home is incredibly modest, as is his way of living.
Barely scraping by when compared to modern standards.

A young man just back from war asks him why he doesn't leave.
The medicine man's response is great

Icelander said:
There are still a few left who practice the old ways. They live in abject poverty for the most part at the back of the reservations. Most have died now.

There has been a lot of maleffective cultural conventions diffused throughout the story of humanity (example being readily accessible alcohol and to a lesser extent--gambling--to Native American Indians)  Alcoholism is a nasty plight to them, and to our own culture which we oftentimes overlook..

Also Native Americans have undergone a horrifically difficult time in the past 300 years (since European Colonialism) since all the Trail of Tears and all of the other evils..

Well I'm out for a while..  But on a different note, thank you all for this conversation thusfar.

Very true and the fact that some stayed with their convictions is a testament to their character. Not all indians have it. In fact it is my belief that for the most part the best died fighting rather then go to the reservations as POWs and slaves.
