a part of me thinks children should be homeschooled to be kept away from all the bullshit and so that they can actually learn something of relevance.
then another part of me feels children need to be a part of public school in order to understand the bullshit in it. I say this because I went to a catholic highschool and can say that I have that to thank for letting me see the bullshit in religion.

short answer: i have no fucking clue.
this is so far off in the future, it's not even a blip on my radar. i don't know where i'll be in life. i don't know what i'll be doing. i don't know whether i'll barely be scraping by, or if i'll have found some monetary success.
i would like to think that i'll at the very least take an active role in my child's education. provide them with supplemental sources, encourage independent study, instill a hunger for knowledge; that sort of thing. but who can say. maybe i'd turn out to be a shite father. procrastinating in parenthood as i do in anything else. hopefully not. and i doubt it. but really, who can tell?

Tri High said: The public school system makes people dependent. One goes to school until they're 18 and then they have little to no practical skills. They can do math (basic), read, write, and understand what is normal to understand at 18.
no it doesnt, the majority of high schools offer vocational programs in a variety of fields, not to mention the education far exceeds learning the alphabet and counting to 10, will a home school parent that graduated highschool be teaching trigonometry, calculus or physics to their child if they never made it past basic algebra
Quote:
Why not teach them the same things by 15 and save them 3 years? Plus give them practical education, like breaking horses, training dogs, gardening, blacksmithing, pottery, making fires, cooking, canning, cleaning animals, etc...
I'm all for teaching a kid all these things but I'd rather see it as 'extracurricular' activity, not a substitute for world history, I kinda figure that there's only so much class time that can be dedicated to making fires and if the kid decides to leave the farm there's only so many jobs available for a fire builder other than free lance arsonist, blacksmithing is kinda scarce in the big city as well
Quote:
American society's education system is far behind because of what it's meant to be - practically day care while the parent goes to work to pay the mortgage.
and we all know that animal husbandry is a top priority in german and japanese schools, part of what makes their education so superior
Quote:
Of course, you're right, it's the student's ability and desire to learn what they're *expected* to learn. But expectations are set low for many reasons.
would that be because many parents like the xbox educational program, kids get home and immediately jump on the game console, what is 'expected' should be on the parents, you cant lay it out on the schools since they're not responsible for that after class time where a parent should be taking a role in their kids upbringing

By the time I am a parent I'll have been college educated.
The real world isn't in the cities - that's the faux world. The real world has to do with what you've got. You've got what you can make or barter for. Any way, I'll prepare my children as best I can for what they may want to do in life. I can't decide for them, but I hope to have an idea by the time they're 12 or 13. And by then I hope to have informed them pretty well of what the world has to offer.
