"When man has developed the spirit of Calmness until it becomes so absolutely part of him that his very presence radiates it, he has made great progress in life. Calmness cannot be acquired of itself and by itself; it must come as the culmination of a series of virtues. What the world needs and what individuals need is a higher standard of living, a great realizing sense of the privilege and dignity of life, a higher and nobler conception of individuality.

With this great sense of calmness permeating an individual, man becomes able to retire more into himself, away from the noise, the confusion and strife of the world, which come to his ears only as faint, far-off rumblings, or as the tumult of the life of a city heard only as a buzzing hum by the man in a balloon.

The man who is calm does not selfishly isolate himself from the world, for he is intensely interested in all that concerns the welfare of humanity. His calmness is but a Holy of Holies into which he can retire from the world to get strength to live in the world. He realizes that the full glory of individuality, the crowning of his self-control is,--the majesty of calmness." Samuel Smiles

I need space.
I need air.
I need the empty fields round me;
and my legs pounding along roads;
and sleep;
and animal existence."

Please Call Me By My True Names
By Thich Nhat Hanh

Don't say that I will depart tomorrow--even today I am still arriving.

Look deeply: every second I am arriving to be a bud on a Spring branch, to be a tiny bird, with still-fragile wings, learning to sing in my new nest, to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower, to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry, to fear and to hope. The rhythm of my heart is the birth and death of all that is alive.

I am a mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river. And I am the bird that swoops down to swallow the mayfly.

I am a frog swimming happily in the clear water of a pond. And I am the grass-snake that silently feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones, my legs as thin as bamboo sticks. And I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl, refugee on a small boat, who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea pirate. And I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my hinds. And I am the man who has to pay his "debt of blood" to my people dying slowly in a forced-labor camp.

My joy is like Spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom all over the Earth. My pain is like a river of tears, so vast it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names, so I can hear all my cries and laughter at once, so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names, so I can wake up and the door of my heart could be left open, the door of compassion.

This poem is from "Call Me By My True Names" The Collected Poems of Thich Nhat Hahn

:peace::heart:

i love this one, part of vairagya shatakam a poem, i was going to post the 'renunciation is fearless' part, which also is lovely, yet i found this and liked it. . . even better. :sun: hehe

'Going searching in the lower regions,
Going into the skies,
Travelling through all the worlds,
This is but the fickleness of the mind.
Ah, friend, you never remember the Lord
Who resides within you!
How can you get happiness?'

and shortly after,

'What is there in the reading of Vedas,
The Shrutis, the Purânas and doing sacrifices?
Freedom alone takes off the weight
of this dreadful world,
And manifests Self-blessedness.
Here is the truth: the rest is all shop-keeping.'

Here is the whole thing; very beautiful poetry. . . I only read the whole thing recently.

it's kind of funny - i think - we only love poetry about forests - be it Rilke or Bhartrihari - after we've experienced it ourselves; after we've been there. . .

Look at your body—
A painted puppet, a poor toy
Of jointed parts ready to collapse,
A diseased and suffering thing
With a head full of false imaginings.

Go ahead, light your candles and burn your incense and ring your bells and call out to the Gods,
but watch out, because the Gods will come,
and they will put you on The Anvil and fire up The Forge and beat you and beat you until they turn brass into Pure Gold.

People to people, party to place
Having the time of your life is all on your face
Hands in the sky, while snatch and catch in the vibe
We go uptown, downtown, that's how we ride!

Get your strip mode, it's where we be at
It's the top dog, the top for drivin' the track
Let, let the bass move, let it go!
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go

Now I've see players, too many to name
Some gain recognition and even fame
Some go slow and some may go fast
But me and my partners we dip and we dash
Every flipping the cash, rip zipping the bag
Should be slip when we crash, all good never bad
All you never had, dreams do come true
For me and you, so let it do what it do!

Boy, let me say, it's the ride of your life
And if you're rolling with me, I tell you, I'll do you right
So put your seat belt on, and let your hair hang low
And if you wet then I suggest you let it go!

People to people, party to place
Having the time of your life is all on your face
Hands in the sky, while snatch and catch in the vibe
We go uptown, downtown, that's how we ride!

Get your strip mode, it's where we be at
It's the top dog, the top for drivin' the track
Let, let the bass move, let it go!
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go

Ride, ride, roll it, tip it, advance it
Turn it, burn it, take it, adjust it!
We can bounce and ball, just tell me how you play
I never give up, I do this thing like everyday
And I break it down in her way
Oh man, I got carried away
But anyway I'mma say
I feel good everyday!
Every way, la, ta, ta
I'll make the beat go pa pa pa
The heat, stop the beat
Listen, attention, permission
'Cause this is grand thing bang, bang
Same range, change lane
Playing games, get you with you, flick it up, rich it up
I slip can't get with us
No matter what!
Next batter up
It's better not
That's what they ask
Come out the grass, so do it fast!

People to people, party to place
Having the time of your life is all on your face
Hands in the sky, while snatch and catch in the vibe
We go uptown, downtown, that's how we ride!

Get your strip mode, it's where we be at
It's the top dog, the top for drivin' the track
Let, let the bass move, let it go!
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
Bass, bass, move, let it go
