well I went looking for one old one by Goethe about Hope & Tree in winter, when I came across these - gosh, they are good! - was gonna put 'em all, but I'll just take a few out. .

well anyway.

In Nature we never see anything isolated, but everything in connection with something else which is before it, beside it, under it, and over it.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - In James Wood, Dictionary of Quotations from Ancient and Modern, English and Foreign Sources (1893), 183:24.

Nature is the living, visible garment of God.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - Faust

Nature goes her own way, and all that seems an exception is really according to order.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - in Johann Peter Eckermann, Conversations with Goethe, Thursday, December 9, 1824, (p. 75), J.M Dent & Sons, England, 1970

Assuredly there is no more lovely worship of God than that for which no image is required, but which springs up in our breast spontaneously when nature speaks to the soul, and the soul speaks to nature face to face.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - The Wisdom of Goethe, ed Blackie, 1883, p187

The spectacle of Nature is always new, for she is always renewing the spectators. Life is her most exquisite invention; and death is her expert contrivance to get plenty of life.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) -"Nature: Aphorisms by Goethe," Nature, Vol. 1, Thursday, November 4, 1869, tr Thomas Huxley, p. 9.

I had another, but forgot it (oh well )
So I came across these again. .

Gosh, come back to Emerson over the years - so very, very much beauty you will see!

ah.. here we go   This was maybe it, that I was thinking of.

Gosh I just want to put this all in bold, or at least a few parts.  Should I?  Ah, I will let it stand as it is.

'We have to learn the art of creating happiness. If during our childhood, we see our mother or father do things that create happiness in the family, we can learn. But if our father and mother did not know how to create happiness in our family, we may not know how to do it. So in our practice community, we try to learn the art of making people happy. . . . Living together is an art. Even with a lot of good will, you can still make the other person very unhappy. Good will is not enough. We need to know the art of making the other person happy. Art is the essence of life. Try to be artful in your speech and action. Art needs some substance, and that substance is mindfulness. When you are mindful, you are more artful. This is something I have learned from the practice.'
-Thay from liberating ancestors article

Joy&Peace to you - as Santideva might say - even those who would wish me harm :sun:

''
Sunny
You smiled at me and really eased the pain.
The dark days are gone, the bright days are here -
My sunny one shines so sincere.''

wheeeeeeeee whoever wrote that.  Bobby Hebb I guess, left the world 5 yrs ago.

hehe.

Boney M is a pretty great - at least to me - rendition of it. . . my fav true.

ok I will bolden some of it. :sun:

lovely Thay quote

“The planet does not need more ‘successful people’. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kinds. It needs people to live well in their places. It needs people with moral courage willing to join the struggle to make the world habitable and humane and these qualities have little to do with success as our culture is the set.”

oh, my friend Krishna Kanth would LOVE that one. . . he is very much into story-telling. . . I love it a lot too - healer is the word for me! hehe. . . that quote is - really superb.

So I created a Twitter account, hehe. . . and abandoned it ( my second one ). . . But I followed there Dalai Lama on there -- a few days ago, and, I can tell ya, it was so worthwhile and beautiful!

Hm... I think this one was in my mind to share recently. ..

"Not necessity, not desire - no, the love of power is the demon of men. Let them have everything - health, food, a place to live, entertainment - they are and remain unhappy and low-spirited: for the demon waits and waits and will be satisfied."  Friedrich Nietzsche

"The degree of freedom from unwanted thoughts and the degree of concentration on a single thought are the measures to gauge spiritual progress." Maharshi

"All bad qualities center round the ego. When the ego is gone, Realization results by itself. There are neither good nor bad qualities in the Self. The Self is free from all qualities. Qualities pertain to the mind only." Maharshi

"Before man attempts to solve the secrets of the Universe without, he should master the Universe within—the Kingdom of the Self. When he has accomplished this, then he may, and should, go forth to gain the outer knowledge as a Master demanding its secrets, rather than as a slave begging for the crumbs from the table of knowledge. The first knowledge for the Candidate is the knowledge of the Self. Before the Man is able to master, control, and direct the things belonging to him—his tools and instruments—he must awaken to a realization of Himself. He must be able to distinguish between the "I" and the "Not I.”"  Yogi Ramacharaka (W.W. Atkinson)

Love is from the infinite, and will remain until eternity.
The seeker of love escapes the chains of birth and death.
Tomorrow, when resurrection comes,
The heart that is not in love will fail the test.

The day we start giving Love instead of seeking Love, we will have re-written our whole destiny.

An oldie but a goodie, a la your Nietzsche quote -

When the Power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace. - Jimi Hendrix

(and I'm guessing that's been posted of dozens of times on this thread, hehe)

and this one. . . ah, this one.

If there is something to desire,
there will be something to regret.
If there is something to regret,
there will be something to recall.
If there is something to recall,
there was nothing to regret.
If there was nothing to regret,
there was nothing to desire.

- the poet

hehe ok that's on the poetry thread.

oh lovely, this:

'The horseman serves the horse,
The neatherd serves the neat,
The merchant serves the purse,
The eater serves his meat;
'T is the day of the chattel,
Web to weave, and corn to grind;
Things are in the saddle,
And ride mankind.' - Emerson

'I wish to write such rhymes as shall not suggest a restraint, but contrariwise the wildest freedom.' - same

'The stars awaken a certain reverence, because though always present, they are inaccessible; but all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence. Nature never wears a mean appearance.' - same

'Love works magic. It is the final purpose of the world story, the Amen of the universe.' - Novalis

'The seat of the soul is where the inner world and the outer world meet. Where they overlap, it is in every point of the overlap.' - same

'Men travel in manifold paths: whoso traces and compares these, will find strange Figures come to light; Figures which seem as if they belonged to that great Cipher-writing which one meets with everywhere...' - same

'Whoso speaks truly is full of eternal life, and wonderfully related to genuine mysteries does his Writing appear to us, for it is a Concord from the Symphony of the Universe.' - same

Ten Twin Verses

We are what we think,
having become what we thought.
Like the wheel that follows the cart-pulling ox,
Sorrow follows an evil thought.

And joy follows a pure thought,
like a shadow faithfully tailing a man.
We are what we think,
having become what we thought.

How will hate leave him if a man forever thinks,
"He abused me, he hit me, he defeated me, he robbed me" ?

Will hate ever touch him if he does not think,
"He abused me, he hit me, he defeated me, he robbed me" ?

There is only one eternal law:
Hate never destroys hate; only love does.

Some never see the point of disciplining themselves.
Others do; they are the wise ones; they do not argue.

How quickly does a small tree break before a big wind!
So Mara the temptress breaks all who are
lascivious, restless, gluttonous, and slothful.

Impossible for the wind to bend a mountain!
So is Mara helpless before all who are
moderate, disciplined, full of faith, and active.

Cast aside meanness, stand on virtue,
learn discipline and speak the truth.
Then will the robe fit you.

Foolish to think that truth is in untruth,
equally foolish that untruth is in truth –
such thinking leads nowhere.

Truth is always truth, untruth always untruth-
this is what matters, this is right desire.

Like rain seeping through an ill-thatched hut,
passion enters the careless mind.

Passion surrenders to the careful mind
like rain helpless before a well-thatched hut.

Only suffering for the evil man -
suffering now, suffering later,
suffering in this world and the next.
His deeds breed suffering, and he suffers.

Happiness for the good man -
happiness now, happiness later,
happiness in this world and the next.
His deeds breed happiness, and he rejoices.

For the evil man, suffering now and later,
suffering everywhere.
"I have done wrong," he says- and suffers, now.
More suffering for him in the next birth.

For the good man, happiness now and later,
happiness everywhere.
"I have done good," he says- and rejoices.
He rejoices more in the next birth.

-Dhammapada

Yes, but there is no pure or impure. . . well what I mean & what I think you all already know. . .

in other words there's a clear & simple reality beyond those things. . .

the field, rumi said, where the world is too full to talk about

that's wonderful.

be notorious, rumi also said. . . who cares about name & fame?

oh, liezi.

Most people would question why these enlightened people do not want to make
themselves known. After all, they possess skills beyond our imagination and
certainly can make an impact on the society and the world. But in a world of
truth and lies, where people are trapped by fame, fortune, approval, and greed,
the sages who hide their skill are the ones who survive.

Don't be imprisoned by name or title, for social conventions can lead you away
from the natural order of things.

If this body of flesh and blood is impermanent, how much more are intangible
things like name, title, and reputation?

When there is no system of reward, there will be no competition. When there is
no competition, there will be no treachery. When there is no treachery, people
can be true to themselves.

Without publicity or fanfare, enlightened beings continue their lives as
ordinary people and live out the rest of their days in simplicity and
contentment, unknown to the world and unaffected by its conventions.

etc.

http://stillness.com/tao/lieh%20tzu.txt

( and here that link words. . . how odd! ) hehe, nevermind that. :p

oh there is another lovely one - where he says it's natural. . . enlightenment is natural, therefore doesn't go against the laws of nature. . . something like that!

by Circastes, about three years ago I think:

'This is the endgame of existence.

There's no way out of what God never and forever begun.

There is no escaping what It has done.

We all knew the end was coming, the end of God's frolicking, God's childhood. We called it the Apocalypse. The Singularity. 2012. All intuitions about what has already happened.

No more games for God...

And here we are, the adult God, in all It's glory, in the only scheme that exists.

Nothing's going to catch you, not the birds at the shore and not the sharks deep in the water.

Perfection.

No matter what you do, you will end up back on dry ground.

Peace, stop trying. Stop trying now.

:peace:
'

I would just say the child God is as wise as the adult God, or something like that. . . love this - it's appropriate here. . . jives with the final Amen of the universe bit above. . .

also reminds me of a poem I wrote but did not include -

'though through the waters I swam,
now forever on dry land I grow'

of course influenced a bit by Waterworld, but who isn't?

So much to learn from all thats been posted here

"Beauty privilege is very real. None of us are imagining it, and if we aren’t born genetic lottery winners, our only option is to compensate with style, grace, and charm. Of course, none of that shit comes cheap. That’s kind of the whole point. It’s all meant to be aspirational and exclusionary. We’re supposed to feel depressed by our skin, agitated by our bodies, and anxious about our invisibility. That’s the insidious subtlety of social control.

The worst part is that we know in our rational minds that it’s all bullshit, and yet we’re still plagued with self-loathing when we can’t live up to unattainable beauty standards. No matter how much self-acceptance we achieve, we can still look in the mirror and instantly catalog all the things about ourselves that we don’t think measure up. It’s maddening. It makes us feel like hypocrites even though it’s not our hypocrisy."

Glad you found the quote useful brother

"Society cares about the individual only in so far as he is profitable. The young know this. Their anxiety as they enter in upon social life matches the anguish of the old as they are excluded from it."

— Simone de Beauvoir. The Coming of Age. 1970.

"No drug causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs— we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power."  - PJ O’Rourke
