"The top triangle represents the Spirit that is within us and at the same time universal, common to everyone and everything else.  The middle triangle represents the soul, the individual spark of the universal Spirit that has, as it were, broken off to form the core of each living being.  The bottom triangle represents the personality; the body, feelings and thoughts with which the soul has 'clothed' itself so that it may come into manifestation.  The Tree of Life, therefore, is a complete map of consciousness.  It is relevant to everything from the whole universe to each individual being.  It represents, through its three basic triangles, the evolution of the individual, and through this, the evolution of the whole universe."  --Will Parfitt, The Elements of the Qabalah

"We see that each human being...participates in an inseparable way in society and in the planet as a whole. What may be suggested further is that such participation goes on to a greater collective mind, and perhaps ultimately to some yet more comprehensive mind in principle capable of going indefinitely beyond even the human species as a whole. (This may be compared to some of Jung's...notions)." --David Bohm

"We Sioux spend a lot of time thinking about everyday things which in our minds are mixed up with the spiritual. We see in the world around us many symbols that teach us the meaning of life. We have a saying that the white man sees so little, he must see with only one eye. We see a lot that you no longer notice. You could notice if you wanted to, but you are usually too busy. We Indians live in a world of symbols and images where the spiritual and commonplace are one...We try to understand them not with the head but with the heart."  --John Fire Lame Deer

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sun rise.

"Keywords in terminology are satori, the sudden flash of insight which brings on Awakening or Enlightenment; the state of muga, which occurs when the split between the acting self and the self-observing self disappears, and the act becomes effortless, automatic, entranced -- so that the painter or swordsman no longer feels that he is wielding the brush or making the thrust, but that a mysterious 'It' has taken charge. Lastly, a man who has completed his training and reached final Enlightenment, will continue to live zestfully and apparently unchanged, but he will 'live as one already dead' -- that is, detached and indifferent to success or failure." --Arthur Koestler

Profound and tranquil, free from complexity,
Uncompounded luminous clarity,
Beyond the mind of conceptual ideas;
This is the depth of the mind of the Victorious Ones.
In this there is not a thing to be removed,
Nor anything that needs to be added.
It is merely the immaculate
Looking naturally at itself.

"Consciousness can play a nonredundant causal role in the determination of our actions: it can play the very role that we intuitively feel that it plays. Quantum theory allows your mind and your brain to co-author your physical actions." --Dr. Henry P. Stapp, Ph.D.

Many, but not all, hunter-gatherers have a notion of the giving environment, the idea that the land around them is their spiritual home and the source of all good things.  This view is the direct antithesis of the Judeo-Christian perspective of the natural environment as a “wilderness,” a hostile space to be subdued and brought to heel by the sheer force of human will.  This latter outlook is seen by many ecological humanists as the source of both the environmental crisis and the spiritual malaise afflicting contemporary society.  --John Gowdy

"In order to survive we have become participants in a religion. If a religion is a specific faith, the faith is, faith in the rational mind. And, therefore, we as professors or as rationalists become the priests in that particular faith system, which is a faith, after all. It's faith in the fact that what you know through your senses, through your thinking mind, and through the logic of your thinking mind, that that has anything to do with anything. That's a faith. There's nothing you can do about it, because you can never get outside of the predicament of knowing, independent of that faith."  --Ram Dass

Haha, look, he could have just said it was from Fight Club.  It drives me nuts when people don't attribute their quotations around here.  By definition, it is plagiarism because we do not have any idea whether the poster is passing it off as their own or not.  When there is that ambiguity, legally and ethically it is the responsibility of the poster to give a source.  I'm very tired of the lack of attributions around here, it's wrong and it's lazy, and I said something.

Quote:

Rev. Morton said:
Amid Birds of Prey

Whoever tends to descend here,
How quickly
The depths swallow them! —
But you, Zarathustra,
Still love the abyss —
Do you, just as the spruce?

Its roots shoot down, where
The rock itself tremors
Gazing into the depths —
It tarries at abysses,
Where everything around
Tends to fall:
Amid the impatience
Of the rough boulders and torrential streams
Patiently enduring, firm, silent,
Solitary ...

Solitary!
Who would even venture
To be a guest here,
To be your guest? ...

A bird of prey perhaps:
who might well hang,
the steadfast patient sufferer,
Gloating delightfully in its coat,
With mad laughter,
A bird of prey's laughter ...

Why so steadfast? —
Cruelly, it scoffs:
One must have wings, if one loves the abyss ...
One must not remain suspended,
Like you, hanged one! —

Oh Zarathustra,
Cruelest nimrod!
Recently still a hunter of God,
The snare of all virtue,
The arrow of evil!
Now —
Hunted by yourself,
Your own prey,
Bored into yourself ...

Now —
Alone with yourself,
Paired in your own knowledge,
Amid a hundred reflections
Before your false self,
Amid a hundred dubious
Memories,
Weary from every hurt,
Chilled by every frost,
Strangled by your own rope,
Self-knower!
Self-hangman!

Why did you bind yourself
With the rope of your wisdom?
Why did you seduce yourself
Into the paradise of the ancient serpent?
Why did you crawl into yourself
In you—into you?

An invalid now,
One who is sick from snake venom;
A prisoner now,
One who drew the hardest lot:
In your own shaft
Laboring bent over,
Excavating yourself,
Digging into yourself,
Without aid,
Stiff,
A corpse —
Overpiled by a hundred burdens,
By your overburdens,
One in the know!
A self-knower!
The wise Zarathustra! ...

You sought the heaviest burden
Yet found yourself —
Cannot cast off yourself from you ...

Lurking,
Crouching,
One who no longer stands upright!
You are deeply rooted in your tomb,
Tangled spirit! ...

And yet recently so proud,
Upon all your stilted pride!
Recently still the godless hermit,
The co-settler with the devil,
The scarlet prince of all arrogance! ...

Now —
Between two voids
One who is twisted,
A question mark,
A weary enigma —
An enigma for birds of prey ...

They'll certainly "dissolve" you,
They no doubt hunger after your "dissolution,"
Indeed they flutter about you, their enigma,
Around you, hanged man! ...
Oh Zarathustra! ...
Self-knower! ...
Self-hangman! ...

Friedrich Nietzsche

What is form in the presence of reality?
Very feeble.  Reality keeps the sky turned over
like a cup above us, revolving.  Who turns
the sky wheel?  The universal intelligence.

And the motion of the body comes
from the spirit like a waterwheel
that's held in a stream.
