Two Weeks and Nothing!

I innoculated 12 1/2pint jars two weeks ago, 6 with B+ and 6 with Golden Teacher. I placed them in an incubator at about 80 degrees. Nothing is growing in the jars. I followed the PF Tek and used whole brown rice that I blended up alittle in a blender. The vermiculite in the jars seems a bit dry. Whenever I look at them the vermiculite seems to move around in the jars like it's completely dry. Should I start over and use more water?

if the mixture shakes around in the jars, then it is probably too dry

Two weeks is a long time to wait for germination. It's difficult to say exactly where you went wrong unless you tell exactly how you prepped your jars.

I used 1/4 cup water for each 1/2pint jar. I think I read somewhere on here that you should use more water for fine vermiculite. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the water amount I should use when I do this again? And is it alright to use whole brown rice that has been run through a blender? Thanks.

did u use some sort of dry heat for them? like a heat pad or light? if so that might be why the water dried out

What you need to do is do away w/ all the measurements. If you are doing 6 jars then get 840 ml of verm. Then just dump water in until it is all wet, not pooled up, but all completely wet. Stir and make sure its even. Then add 240 ml of brf. Maybe the granule size of the brf is hindering your efforts. Try home depot, they have a 10 dollar grinder and maybe you will get a finer powder w/ that. Then it should mix a bit better. If not that, then buy a bag of it for 4 dollars. Its very fine. And make sure you dont compact it into jars, fluff it. If you do that you should be problem free for all of 2003.

Ummm you say do away with all measurements but then tell her to put in 840ml of vermiculite...
And ml is a measurement of liquids!

i also thought my jars may be a little dry ( pf tek ) but am afraid to open them due to contams ( good point Micky ) patience is a virtue, or so they say - wait a little longer and see what happens

I had some jars that did not germinate right away. I made some more and they did well, but I kept the noshows in the incubator anyway (did not need the jars). After about A month some small growth was present. Thought it might have been a contam or somthing but it looked ok. Turned out to be some nice growth. Only one out of six jars contamed.
So, if you dont need the jars, make another batch and start form there.
Best of Luck. AWG

It is not a dry problem, especially if you used syringes to inoculate the cakes. Spores can germinate with very little umidity in the substrate. Two weeks are a lot of time if temperature was right. To high or to low temperature can retard germination of spores. You should double check your temperature especially on the bottom of the incubator. or: - The spores can be dead in the syringes, this can happen sometime. Or they are to old and need more time to germinate. - You got them contamined from some invisible bacteria. My suggestion is to carefully adjust temperature around 80 and wait some time. Also prepare some new jars using different and new syringes. Byez

Thanks all for the good info. I'm going to do 6 of them over and add a heating pad under my incubator. Right now all I have is a fish tank heater in a large glass vase full of water. The temps in the incubator stay around 75-80. What is an effective but fairly cheap way to incubate these jars properly? Again, thanks for the help, hopefully I'll have success on the next attempt.

not every house/apt has this type of set up. but there are a lot that does
if you have the little storage space above the refridgerator, i found that to be a perfect spot for incubation (plenty of room also). the heat from the radiator thing on the back of the fridge keeps the temps just right. it fluxuates just a bit, but not enough to do anything bad.
hope that helps. cuz its a free incubation place if you got it

Yes. Some contams aren't as agressive as others and won't attack the mycelium but will rather stop when they meet.
