Would this work to innoculate grain?
    #1189639 -

Taking A BRF cake and grating some of it and putting it in the jar with grain. Give it a shake and wait for it colonize?

I want a way to innoculate grain without using agar and all that. I don't have the money.

Or would innoculating honey water with a syringe do the job. Ones there is mycelium in the jar innoculate the grain with it.

Just Innoculate the grain with a spore syringe after you P.C your grain jars...

Yes you can innoculate grain with a BRF cake. The mycelium water works well too. Innoculating with a cake should work faster as there is more mycelium. With one 1/2 pint BRF cake you could easily start 5 pints of grain.

The spores won't germinate.

I think I will try mycelium water to innoculate the grain...

And then with one jar of grain you can innoculate other jars..With those jars you can innoculate more jars. Kinda like mitosis  :smirk:

not entirely nonsense. mostly nonsense tho. the spores DO have to be "next" to each other to mate/germinate and shooting a weak syringe into a quart of jar of grrain raises the possibility of the spores being too far from each other to mate/germinate. that being said, that is not a very large possibility.

also BRF is grain. what with all the talk of grain to grain transfer, you'd think that transferring BRF (grain) to rye (grain) would work, right? especially since any amount of searching will show that many people, including myself, have posted great results with this method.

I have had nothing but success with injecting spores into grain jars.

What are the odds that two spores won't be right next to each other. In other words, injecting spore solution will defenitely work.

Really?

So I don't need to work with agar or anything??

So I can just PC some grain, innoculate it with a normal spore syringe. Wait utill it colonizes. And then spawn pasteurized straw with it?

No. Unless you want to make an isolate.

An isolate?

Please tell me the best way of going about what I want to do. Thanks.

Don't worry about an isolate. Just do a multispore inoculation with a spore syringe, you will be fine, there is little to no chance that the spores will not germinate.

Put some mycelium in sterilized agar in a sterile environment and watch the mycelim grow.

Thats an isolate. You isolated the strain.

Alright! Thanks!

So mycelium water, transfer, spore syringe, will all innoculate grain ( birdseed , rye , etc )

Not only will multispore innoculation work on birseed, it should work fast. In the past week I've done 20+ pints of birdseed with mutispore innoculation(4 different strains) and have seen growth on all of them within 48 hours.

SWEET!!

Is birdseed big enough though? The seeds are so small in it. Would it colonize slowly since they are so compact and small? And I can't see it shaking too well either. I picture it in clumps.

I use pennington's wild birdseed. works good for me. And what do you mean by big enough? If size of substrate was important, how could you use brown rice flour?

Yes it's big enough. It is also usually the cheapest of all grains usually costing under $.50/lb. Soak it overnight, load into jars until they are about 3/4 full, pressure cook, let cool and innoculate. I read in another post that you don't know what psi your pc cooks at so I would cook the jars for 80-90 minutes, atleast thats what I do with my 10psi pc.

In addition to Skryllz directions, I would recommend to rinse and drain the birdseed after the 24 hour soak.

Yeah my bad, I'm a little stoned right now, always rinse and drain. Drain for about a half an hour even if it doesn't seem like much water is coming out.

What do you use to drain? Would a cloth in a collander do? So the seed doesnt fall through yet drains good?

Rated you guys 5 stars for your help. Thanks.

I just use a big plastic pasta strainer, is that a collander(I've always thought a collander were the strainers made of wire mesh)? Some seeds do fall through but you could either pick them up and throw them back in or just throw them away. A couple seeds won't make any difference.
