Neglect tek, and...?
    #1034086 -

Hey all, I'm steaming my first pf jars as I write. I posted earlier that I was eager to get started (of course) but I'm going to have a sporadic schedule for a couple months.

I've decided to take a trial run using the neglect tek - but I'd like some input.

First, I've got 4 jars steaming. Lets assume I lose one - is three worth doing? Should I run a few more jars?

Second, I've got about 37 days from today where I would be able to keep an eye on what ever cultivation method(s) I use. Do you think it would be worth my effort to set up a super poor-mans terrarium in addition to a few neglect tek jars?

Third, I've got EQ, GT, and PES Hawaiian strains. I don't plan on using a whole syringe in this run, but I don't want to end up wasting something that I would have been better off using when I have time to use a more advanced cultivation method.

The PF website mentions the EQs as a good candidate for neglect tek. The PES Hawaiians are suposed to have fairly fast colonization and fruit fairly easily. What do you recomend I use?

Thanks for your help!

Kinda ironic how everyone has neglected you neglect tek questions....

So you have 37 days to watch over your shit, hmmm lets do the math. Sterilization to complete colonization..........approx 3 weeks (if you use an incubator)
Colonization to fruiting........about a week till pins start to form
Fruiting till death of casing or cakes......maybe 3 weeks to a month. So your looking at about a 2 month process, give or take a few weeks given your specific conditions. I'd say do a couple of cakes just to get some fruits real quick, then do the bulk when you get back.

not such good results [Re: Theta]

I haven't had very good results with any 'neglect' teks. Heck, I don't even get very good casing results with 'obsessive' teks. I would expect if you leave these things, you'll return to the bitter smell of mold.

good luck,

Neglect is easy to mess up, but once you get it, it is easy to do. The most common problem I used to have with it was lack of air exchange during colonization in rubbermaid containers. Either drill vent holes in the bottom on the container to let the trapped gasses escape, or use a plastic bag to line a cardboard box (which works much much better). I wouldn't bother with neglect until you have mastered casing, dung, and spawn transfers.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm giving it a shot with the 4 jars I inoculated with EQ today. If it fails big deal. I've already learned a bit from what little I've done.

hmm im a bit confused cause i think theres "invitro tek" and "neglect tek" both utilizes neglect so "neglect tek, and...?" wtf am i saying?

I don't know about any of the neglect teks... I was refering to bulk substrate which is innoculated with grain transfer and then ignored until fruiting.

hello,
i'm the guy who wrote the neglect tek cited on pf's website.
it's really pretty simple.
make pf style jars.
expose them to light ASAP.
watch as the cake colonizes then fruits in the same jar.
when jar is pretty full of fruitbodies, open it up, pick cake clean, dunk if needed, and return to jar for another fruiting cycle.
it's just that simple.
we have a great deal more info about invitro-style growing in our archives at mycotopia.net, feel free to check them out.
the pf's and eq's and ha's all do well invitro.

This is what I was refering to, Hippie's neglect tek - not bulk sub neglect. Thanks for commenting...

Hippie3....Im going to be trying your in vitro tek after i get done fruiting now and i was just curious about something. Does there need to be any air exchange during the colonization and during the fruting?

Hi Hippie3. I have two questions about your neglect tek: 1) Your tek makes no mention of air exchange. When colonizing in the incubator, it's good to tape the holes and also cover the lid with foil and tape the edge of it onto the side of the jars all around with duct tape. This way there is no way that contaminants can enter the jar during colonization, which I deem to be the most sensitive time. They should colonize fine that way but I was wondering if one can leave this foil onto the lid after colonization is complete and invitro fruiting is initiated, or does one need to leave the holes untaped with no foil over them to allow air exchange? 2) You mentioned that PF, EQ, and HA do well with your tek. I was wondering if B+ would also do well, considering how large the mushrooms can get. Then again, I guess that EQ is also a fairly large mushroom. In any case, are there any strains that will NOT work well using the neglect tek? Thanks a lot.

When you are fruiting inside the jars it is best to have them upside down because c02 is heavier than air and will seep out. Then new fresh air should be sucked in. If it was up right the c02 would not leave and no air can get in suffocatingthe mycelial network.

i'd leave the lid holes open, not taped, and jars inverted, that's really about all the air exchange that's needed.
b+ does ok invitro, but isn't quite as prolific as some other strains.

So I guess one would also have to elevate the jar somehow so that air could escape and come back in the jar? When you do the neglect tek, Hippie, do you elevate the jars somehow or just sit them flat on their lids on the floor?
