My First Grow Log(Completed)

Well this is my First attempt of growing fungus :smile:
The medium is Brown rice and vermiculite as
in Pf Tec.The containers are throw away chinese
takerway containers cleaned then filled with
the medium,then toped with a verm layer about 1cm

Innoculation was in 4 spots through the tops
As there thin plastic no preholes were made
just 4 blobs or window sealant.Then injection
was done straight through the blobs and lids
into the medium.These then self heal as the
needle is pulled out(Read that hear some were
and it seems to work well :smile: )

Then incubated in a propergator identical to the one below
at a steady 80?f since the 14/12/02
Fruiting chamber


Again


This is another plant propergator that cost about ?10
No thermostat but temps can be controled but air intake vents.
Bottom heating elements keep it a constant 76?f with a pool
of water in the base to keep things humide

My first Pin :smile: :smile: :smile:


And my first pin appeared today :smile: the cake was birthed 2 days
ago.I had a false alarm the other day when i returned from the
pub to see what i thought was a pin but morning showed it to be
just a thicker part of mycelium lol.

Good to see you giving it a go.  First off, let me say its cool to see someone with origional and inginuitive ideas.  What did you colonize the cakes in, chinese containers?  Wow, that is simply amazing.

I'd recommend damp perlite, as it is considerably less of a vector for contams, but then again, this grow is anything but orthodox.  :wink:

I Steamed them in a vegetable steamer
for 1.5 hours,and yeah i thought about perlite
or clay peebles to expand the surface area for evaporation
but decided to try just water out first :smile: thinking the
opposite of what you just said lol.I was thinking just water
with h2o2 wouldn't hold contams as well as perlite.
As i always see it turn green after a short time in
seed trays.Humiderty stays level at 95% anyway.

I also have 3 standard cakes and a more normal rubbermaid
fruiting chamber using perlite,aquarium heater and a bubbler but the cakes
are 3 or 4 days behind the above cake as it seemed to do better
right from the start.Only forseable problem  i think im going to
come across is the height of the propagator(only 5" from cake top to lid :frown: )
But if it works out i already have 7 heated propagators so im
thinking 1 cake per fruiting propergator would give them contam
protection from each other and they would all fit neatly into
my shelving :smile:

12 hours later the pin is twice the size with more apearing all over  :smile:

or tumble of into the pool  :smile:

Ah i forgot to say that the propergator was also
the incubator for the cake.i just close the top vents
untill it reached 80?f then put the whole thing in a
box for darkness.It colinized(As its bottom heat i placed the cake on a mesh screen
so as not to dry out the cake base :smile:

No offence to who made that Pod thingi for $169
but these cost about $15-$20 ,max

The chinese containers - are they those plastic things?
And they held up ok sterilization?

Yep those dishwasher/microwave safe ones
held up easyerly to 1 1/5 hours steaming.
Ive only melted one so far and that was a
millet microwave test were the millet pops and
swells lol so pushes the plastic out of shape.

first shroom is now 2.5 cm with more forming.

Wow, that is simply amazing, you pretty much disregarded most rules in cultivation, and you are succeeding.  If it was the mid 90s, I'd do a Wayne and Garth (Wayne's World) bowing salute.  :grin:  Well I am even more impressed.  Good job, and add pics.

Sorry the photos crap i was trying to hold the lid and get the shot at the same time.
When the g/f gets home ill ask her to hold the lid and get some close ups.




These are the sort of containers im trying.Next lot i start with some golden teacher
i think ill try as mini casings.By just incubating like this one but instead of tipping
out the cake ill keep it in and case the top with 50/50 As i think i left it a bit late to birth as the poor oldest shroom is upside down lol.

I didnt think i was doing to much different?As its mainly the temp humidity thing that does it right?I'm just using what i already had.The only thing i needed to buy
was brown rice and syringes(didn't by those i nicked em from the g.u.m clinic :tongue: )
Every thing else i had already.But thats just cos i keep fish reptiles and am a gardener.

i think that will work, im using something similar for a casing/fruiting chamber, except i didnt go all out like you and colonize my substrate in the container!  again: mad props! :wink:

Had a few probs with the plant propergator
as it was driping to much water onto the cake.
So as i made a fruiting chamber for the jar cakes
i have i thought id move the plastic cake in there.

And since getting there it stalled the pins a little.But the main shroom
kept growing and is my avatar pic.

But the pins have now started up again,and the bruiseing cleared up
as the new chamber has vaseline smeared on the inside of the lid.
im going to retry the plant propergator with the next lot of chinnese
container cakes but im going to modify the top or add a drip sheild.

My other jar cakes are all pinning now as well :smile:

so all that impatients was just that :smile: it just takes a bit of time.

Ate the first shroom last night not expecting much.
But had a nice mellow buzz :smile: little wall breathing
and screen swirling :smile: so looking forward to more.

The pins i thought had stalled and would become
aborts are growing well :smile: i think they like the new
fruiting chamber more :smile:

as its more stable at 74?f we should se a fruiting brick soon :smile:
The fruiting chamber is 3" of water with a bubbler and an aquarium heater
in.With a tray on stilts just above the water surface.No perlite just water.
The action of water evapourating and running back down the sides
should stop it all stagmenting.The bubbler is working as and air exchanger and also working to create a pressure from inside the container meaning all
possible contam entries are blowing air out of the chamber thus not allowing contams entry :smile: hopefully.

i did have one small green patch apear on one of the jar cakes but i just dripped some 17.5% h2o2 onto the spot.It fizzed a bit and is now on the decline :smile:

Growths ecelerating quite well now :smile:
Though the brick is a bit one sided :frown:
Im trying some millet bricks on the next
batch and there colonizing well.

My other cakes are catching up now 2 :smile:


i think 2003 is going to be a shroomy year.Now to start some edibles :smile:

Well the first fruiting from the brick is nearly complete(could be classed as the second as the one in my avatar grew much faster than the rest)Im hope  the next will be better but still pretty happy with these :smile: enuff for some weekend fun i recon :smile:

Cant say that the brick worked so well as the cakes did better :tongue: weight wise.Still gona percerver with the bricks though.

good work ganja. as said above, you have 2 original ideas (brick cake and propogator) - pretty impressive!

btw (1) what does (U.D.) mean?

Try moistening a little bit of vermiculite and dropping it on top of the brick, that may help it. Since the shrooms are all coming from the bottom, I don't think the brick is getting enough water.

Yeah agreed i think its to dry to.
Its lite in weight.So i think ill dunk it flip it
over into a deeper container than the one
it came out of and case it with peat verm
and oyster shell.

Nice work man... been a few since I checked on your thread... Nice pics and original ideas are cool.... I was wondering, and didn't see in your post what your growing there? Maybe I missed it somewhere.. How did you go about making the brick? Anyway keep it up ... Cant wait to see what it will do after dunking and casing...

Well as i (and others)think the brick got a bit dry
I thought id case it :smile: So i dunked it in the fridge
for 6 hours and then I put 1cm of
casing mix in the bottom of a larger plastic tray
then added 2cm to the top and about 2cm at the
sides.Didnt break it up i just burried it whole.The origanal
way up it was incubated.

Things look good so far :smile: the casing mix is about 75% multi purpose
compost 20% vermiculite and 5%oyster shell.And the mycelium has
just reached the surface.

The 3 cakes  were also dunked for the same amount of time
and 2 had damp vermiculite placed in the bottom of there dishes
except 1 that had the same casing mix as above mentioned placed
under and on it.Suprisingly this one is doing the best so far.

Forgot to say that i got 14 mushrooms from the first flush :smile: brick and 3 cakes.
Which was better than i expected,and just enougth for a little gathering :smile:

Going well so far :smile: dam all the waiting and now more shrooms than i can use lol.
Cakes are out performing the brick by quite a long shot.But the brick has had more temp/fruiting chamber/humiderty changes that the cakes.

Yo, your doin very well buddy,
well done for using the propogater, tis a handy item. Just a question about the trays your casing with, did they come with the propogater? if so they have holes in the bottom. I want to find a use for these trays but im worried that if i make a casing with them and put on my grow chamber (which is a perlite set-up) then nasty shit may happen. what do you think??

Yep there the ones with holes in the bottom.I keep the tray there on pretty clean and instead of dunking I water from the bottom between flushes.No contams yet
as the whole room is filtered air and i use highland spring water for watering.

I crumbled 2 cakes up and cased them as well into one and that is doing well :smile: two.
Havent really encountered contams yet as all my first stuff from just after xmas is still going.As well as all the new things.I need a bigger room :smile:

There all in an indoor greenhouse from homebase now with the propergator just filled with water and perlite and left turned on and open to humidify the greenhouse.
