Suillus pungens
    #1188634 - 01/03/03 06:32 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Well, I went on a very quick (15 minutes!) walk this afternoon, this was the only specimen I found. It was getting dark!

I believe its a Suillus pungens. Mainly because of the white milky liquid coming from the very small white pores.

Habitat is what its laying on: pine mixed with some oak in some coastal mountains in California.

As usual, another fine photo.

Suillus pungens sounds reasonable. It should have a fairly strong odor.

Another species which resembles this is Suillus granulatus (Arora states that sometimes the young ones are whitish). If your specimen is lacking in odor then perhaps this is what it is.

Happy mushrooming!

Angry,

I've been trying to get ahold of you.. are my PMs going through?
nice specimen, and good ID -- I would agree with your findings.
