When counter culture becomes culture

In the 1960's, if you wanted to rebel, you smoked pot, you had premarital sex, you created art, you played electric guitar, you swore, you protested, and you listened to rock and roll.

Nowadays all of these things have become social norms. When you are a teenager, you are expected to experiment with drugs and listen to rock music. It is now the majority of teenagers who are having premarital sex. Everybody is an artist. Everyone has pink hair and wears ripped jeans and has a tattoo or piercings. All of these things that were previously considered rebelious are now just expected of young adults in america.

The act of rebeling has become a way to conform, to fit your mold as a young person.

This makes it extremely difficult to truly rebel against anything. It seems that the only way to rebel these days is to conform because rebellion has become such an accepted phenomenon in our culture.

Any suggestions on how one can break out of this cycle and really rebel against "the man" without feeding into that "rebelious youth" image?

Be your own person. Don't do things because everybody else is doing them. That's the true way to rebel.

Forget about rebelling against anything. Focus on what you are for and follow that.

Does anyone remember that episode of Doug when some famous guy on a magazine is wearing the exact same clothes Doug always wears and then everyone at school starts wearing them? He always wore that green vest with those brown shorts. And when doug tries to explain to all his friends that he isn't just following the fad, that those were his real clothes that he always wears, they dont believe him. They all just thinks hes buying into the fad like they are.
