I live on the other side of the planet. It's too dark here now. I need daylight to take some good shots.

man i got a boner lookin at that!! so it went straight through and is now wrapping around back to its original inoc point!? its sooooo cool.
those thick rhizos look like a group of frosted or snow covered decidous trees seen from a distance. or even a painting of that! absolutley stunning.
whats your next step going to be? do you think you can get fruits off it? is it going to go outside eventually?

Good questions! I really don't know if it will fruit. The problem will be to maintain the correct temperatures (50F - 60F) to induce fruiting after the block is fully colonized. But springtime is near and probably I will place the plastic tub outside to induce fruiting.

Wow nightflyer, this boggling my mind! Congratulations man, who would've known that something like this was possible? The implications are definitely interesting.

Thanks. I really hope that it will be possible to grow Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata in the same way like Shiitake someday: on logs.
It would make it a lot more easier for many people to grow magic mushrooms.

This is also helpful for people who live in an area where they grow naturally. Now I know now to just look for wood chips or buried decaying logs, but regular old full sized logs as well. Assuming you get it to fruit that is.

Wow just Wow that is awesome man!! beautiful colonization!! I do have one ? you said you washed the willow chunk to rid it of any soluble sugars? how did you go about this? I don't see any reason why the tub wouldn't produce fruits giving the correct conditions outdoors or even possibly indoors..can't wait to see what becomes of you're Ovoids...e

The willow chunk was submerged in ordinary water for several weeks 'til it was saturated and a side effect of this process is that the soluble sugars are washed out and mold spores have no chance to germinate because they need soluble sugars.

Great stuff - very exciting! Lovely rhizomorphs there! Of course the proof of the pudding remains... I'll be watching this space.
Do you think it would work on unprocessed birch logs after a soak? Maybe after stripping the bark off?

I think so. But to soak a solid wood log takes a lot of time! Birch is ok. The question is, if the mycelium is really able to permeate solid wood logs. The wood dowels technique works best. I will drill some holes and insert the colonized wood dowels into the holes.

I might try the sandwich technique as well, had I any ovoid spores myself...
I earmarked two of my logs for Kuehneromyces mutabilis and have another log spare.
