Recommended Pressure Cooker?
    #1188602 - 01/03/03 06:20 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I was curious as to what kind of pressure cooker anyone recommends. It cant give off heat on the bottom, and something that would hold about 15 - 20 1/2pint jars.

Im a little curious as to what everyone else used (name, brand, etc.)

I use a Presto. It's the best.

Err, also, how many 1/2 pint jars could a 22qt pressure cooker hold?

I use an All American 921, and its the best (sorry Rail). I can easily stack a dozen 1/2 pint jars (I haven't tried more, but there was room to spare). I like the All Americans because they are built to last and you don't have to fuck around with a rubber seal.

My presto is a 4 quart. It's always worked frr me, it would be hard to do anything wrong except overcook the jars. Mine will hold 4 jars at a time.

A 22 quart would be very expensive. It would also be more convenient, if you're doing dozens of jars at once. But for big stuff like that you might as well go bulk with a gran tek. I only do PF couple dozen jars tops.

I got a Mirro 4.2qt PC. It only goes up to 10psi so I have to cook everything for an extra 30 minutes, but it was only $17, so if your broke(or just cheap) like me go for the Mirro 4.2qt.

You shouldn't have any problems with the rubber seal unless you store the cooker with the lid on with a tight seal. But now that you mention it mine is 3 years old and gets used all the time for cooking as well and it does need a new rubber seal. I'll have to get one somewhere.

I use only All American Pressure Cookers.
I have a model 910 and a model 930.
The model 930 will hold 14 Quart jar's.  :smirk:
I like using the smaller 910 for making up agar.

You can't go wrong with an All American...its made in the good old USA!!!

Bah, I got myself a 17 QT Presto Pressure cooker ... can hold around 12 1/2 pint jars or more

Good price.. $80 (including S&H)

The all-american 921 is very expensive, you're looking at $120 USD +, not including S&H if you want to buy online

I bought mine at www.redhillsgeneralstore.com
You can search around there, but I would suggest you do some searching around first.
Don't buy anything off of Ebay, they suck and want to rip you off... trust me

Just be careful and know how much they are worth.

I picked up a brand new All American 930 for $200.00 including shipping.
They are worth $230.00 plus about $25.00 for shipping.

Snipe the bid in the last 5 seconds if you have cable internet.

Used pressure cookers should be much cheaper than new ones.

good luck and happy bidding!

I have the All american 921. They bust ass! All parts are replaceable (not that your gonna need to replace them) and they don't discontinue models. the 921 I have was made in 1963 and still works like new!! I got mine off eBay for $65. I did have to buy a new divot (the metal plate/ring with holes for the bottom) for a whopping $7. If you wanna buy new then mycosupply.com has the best prices that I've found. If you really got dough to toss around then get one of those All American stereoclaves, and kiss the stove goodbye.

I've been meaning to ask if anyone has used these pressure cookers before. It doesn't have a max pressure rating anywhere on the box or in the instruction booklet.

I like my Mirro 17 Qt. Even has one of those fancy-shamcy pressure gauges, so I'll ACTUALLY get to try grain with controlled parameters.
