Mushrooms make your brain bleed, and that's the high!

Yes, that's right. Somebody I know who has very strange ideas about drugs believes that mushrooms actually cause your brain to bleed and then you get high from that. I think the most fucked up thing about him is that even though this is what he truly believes, he still eats them on the rare occassion. Imagine eating something you "know" would make your brain bleed???

Maybe some of you can help me set him straight. His theory made me realize that I don't sound super smart when talking about how psilocybin acts in the brain. Here's how I would explain it to him currently:

"Psilocybin is structurally very similar to serotonin and DMT which are both natural neurotransmitters. It simply shunts serotonin to the side and makes use of its receptors until the body's monoamine oxidase enzymes break the psilocin down as it courses through the blood."

So some questions I have are: Where does the 9 day tolerance come from? Why does it happen? Increase in MAO? I understand that MAO breaks it down in the circulatory system. Does this mean that a psilocin molecule acts in the brain, then leaves into the blood and is either broken down or if not then makes it back to the receptor to go at it again? Or is each individual molecule used once and then recycled, pissed out or whatever? What would be the consequences of a brain bleeding from mushrooms, a stroke?

any additional info would be cool too. Help me crush a fool's soul people!!

Good explanation but even the experts really have no idea. Melotonin is very similar to serotonin too and that isn't psychedelic. No-one really knows why mushrooms work.

Don't forget to tell him that if it made your brain bleed then you'd be having a stroke and you'd die. Then tell hiim that he's a big fucking idiot. I don't know what I'd do if I knew someone that stupid. It would really make me mad.

these cells are "inhibitors" and they inhibit some of the oldest most important parts of the brain and when LSD\Psilocybin comes in (this is the trippy part) LSD or Psilocybin dampens the Raphe cells

Its hard not to argue with ignorant people. For me, I just think about how much misinformation is out there already and I dont want it to spread. then I think that this dumb ass that im talkin to might not have a psychedellic experience his whole life cuz he was told lies by some other gullable ignorant fuck who was told by another one and so on and so on. A lotta times i feel like maybe if i set this person straight then itll b like a chain reaction eventually and they all will b set straight and may even try it.

Actually, Psilocybin is not psychoactive. It is not the psilocybin taking up residence in the serotonin receptors. Rather, psilocybin is broken down in the digestion process into psilocin, and that travels through the bloodstream to hook up with serotonin receptors.Psilocin, ultimately, is what is psychoactive.

What's crazy is that melatonin is so similar to psilocybin that it could be considered a schedule 1 drug because of the analog act.

Agreed, it's basically an indole which can easily be made into psychoactives

Actually the opposite is true, in terms of bleeding. 5-HT2A agonists help regulate platelet function. Platelets express 5-HT2A receptors, and activation of these receptors helps promote blood coagulation.

Psilocybin/psilocin is a potent 5-HT2A agonist.

Blood is a metaphor for physical harm which releases serotonin.  The graphic image comes from the nature of the mushrooms and often dark imagery.
