Jonestown: Life and Death of People's Temple

So I watched a documentary last night about the People's Temple church and how their leader, Jim Jones, brought them all down to Guyana to avoid bad publicity. When a few reporters went down to check it out, upon first impression they were with how happy and organized everything seemed to be. Then a few people secretely handed them notes saying, "We want to leave! Help us get out of here!". The next day as the reporters were boarding their plane, taking a few Jonestown people with them, a truck pulled up beside the airstrip and gunned them all down. Later, Jim Jones called a town meeting when he instructed everyone to drink cyanide kool-aid and die with dignity, otherwise the world would come and make a disgrace out them. So 909 people willingly killed themselves together on Nov. 18th 1978. One survivor said, "I was just standing there, watching my wife and child start to foam at the mouth when I thought, holy shit this is real!" I already knew this story but watching a full length documentary about it really brought it home how fucking crazy this Jonestown thing was. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in human behaviour. Has anyone seen it?

Very interesting stuff. We read a lot about Jim Jones and Jonestown in my social psychology class in college. Looks like a cool program, I'll have to search for the whole thing.

That's why Jonetown is so interesting, this was a thousand normal people, with their spouse and kids leaving everything and going to Guyana. He had a much bigger following back in the States, but many people couldn't make the move for whatever reason.
Jim Jones used a lot of social prompting and such. Read about it here: The Social Animal by Aronsohn
