The "Evil Eye"
    #1188161 - 01/03/03 05:14 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

My sister in law was telling me of a Greek belief called, "The Evil Eye". She says that it occurs when one person looks at another with an "evil eye" and passes on, I guess what can be called bad Karma. Then infected person then feels sick in a way they have never felt before.
The person who GIVES the evil eye never does it intentionally, it just sort of happens.
Like, you know when you look at someone, and you are thinking to yourself, "She looks really good tonight" and you are looking at the person in "that way"...
Apparently this is giving someone the evil eye.

There is one way to cure it, and it is a strange procedure that was sort of explained to me, but not really, because it cannot be taught to just anyone.

This is a hard explination to type, but if any of you know what I am talking about, you'll understand by now. It was a very interesting topic to me, but I don't know much about it. I'd love to learn more, if any of you have heard of the Evil Eye... Please, share with me your experiences.

What is the current interest late on passed-on karma? With today's low rates, it might be right to defer your payment.

Envy, n. The word evolved from the Latin verb, invidere. Although that's simply "to see into," even the word's original shade of meaning was negative and intrusive.

the evil eye is a phrase that has been used across time and space.

It refers to an evil glare that brings negativity into a persons life.

it doesn't affect that person's Karma.

So, perhaps 'karma' was the wrong word to use...
I guess you don't see my point anyway.

The evil eye is the name for a sickness transmitted -- usually without intention -- by someone who is envious. It is also called the invidious eye and the envious eye. In Italian it is mal occhio (the bad eye) and in Spanish mal ojo or el ojo (the bad eye or just the eye). The evil eye belief is that a person -- otherwise not malific in any way -- can harm you, your children, your livestock, or your fruit trees, by *looking at them* with envy and praising them. The word "evil" is unfortunate in this context because it implies that someone has "cursed" the victim; such is not the case. A better understanding of the term "evil eye" is gained if you know that the old British and Scottish word for it is "overlooking," which implies merely that the gaze has remained too long upon the coveted object, person, or animal.

Little Shroom's comments match my own understanding of the "evil eye", i.e., that it is connected with envy and jealousy. The notion of "karma" doesn't really apply. Little Shroom also mentioned Italy and Spain, which is true--the belief in the "evil eye" is widespread throughout the Mediterranean countries and in the Middle East as well. In Turkey you see a lot of blue eye-like glass beads that are used to ward off the evil eye. People hang them up over doors and in their cars (doesn't seem to help much, though--Turkey has one of the worst highway fatality rates in the world). I think I saw them in Greece as well.

Lucky charms of various sorts seem to exist all over the world. Many people who are completely rational and reason-oriented in other parts of their life use these things. I do as well. I guess it's sort of like Pascal's wager--they can't HURT you, and who knows, maybe in some strange way they can help. But if you believe in them so profoundly that you don't bother to wear your seatbelt . . .

Karma is as a result of your thoughts or actions towards someone or anything really. It is based on the Universal law of cycles, and balance. When you send a thought or energy or action out into the external world it is eventually returned to you with the same potency that it left. Bad Karma is not a punishment, but a balancing force.. it leaves the person feeling a need to do good towards someone, in order to balance the karma. Though a person may build up "bad" karma, they may not realize the effects of it until later in their life or even in the next. Either way, the karma exist to maintain balance, and eventually the scales will balance.

i can see where you could inderectly transfer negative energy if you were giving someone the look of death, and they respond with attitude. but i don't think there is an equation if you give someone this much evil eye, they will get this pissed off...

This type of thing kind of relates to that question in the "General Questions" forum where Spiffy was wondering if a trip can be passed on through contact...

You can pass on bad vibes just by looking at somebody. As for actually making them physically SICK, I can't believe that without some type of scientific evidence.

Hey Mr. Mushrooms...
You really know how to make someone feel welcome.
Thanks dude.

I am glad to see that I am not insane, and someone else knows something of the evil eye. I was given a breif introduction to the topic my by sister-in-law, and I guess I just wanted to see if anyone could add to the knowledge, or reassure me that my family isn't nuts.

It seems like something I'd like to do more research on though...
Thanks for the help and information, ladies and gents!
