mellowparty said: If you really experience memory problems then just quit smoking while your studies last. Im 1st year in university, doing molecular biology, and I know what hardwork means. I got high twice in 3 months (honestly my life was a social disaster). IMO stick to smoking once a week, perhaps friday night so to call it a week in a way.
I know that feeling of being obsessed with studies and grades n shit. It sucks to get lower grades than expected. Than can turn a man down. Find a way to sustain your motivation and focus on a future goal. Just keep on thinking about how cool it would be once this stage is over. Thats how I got to uni. I had to take a literature exam and I was shit in that subject. Had to cover 2yrs material in 2-3 months (it was the kind of material I find utterly boring and annoying). But I just concentrated on the feeling of passing that shit and going to study what suits me best. I got 96% So dont quit smoking. Just reduce the frequency of getting baked. Oh and since u have a lot of shit to remember do some piracetam. That usually helps me A LOT!
I know what you mean about hard work! I took 45 units in one academic year to get ahead, and about to graduate university in 3.5 years. I'll take note of the piracetam.

Any other suggestions, alternative methods?
I understood the OP well enough, if these were the questions you wanted answered.
I recommended smoking ganja (and therefore getting a card). I gave my reason as to why I see 'possibly jeopardizing my chances of future successes' is the lesser worry in the light of 'emotional health via stress reduction'.
But, of course, I don't know exactly how marijuana effects you-- so if you don't think that advice would work I suggested an alternative method (fulfilling your second question), meditation.

Kava Kava is an excellent anxiolytic along with Valerian root. Meditation and exercise of course will be very beneficial.

Kava kava's good but for me it always causes some nausea which can offset the positive effects on mood. Do you ever use it? Is there any particular way to ingest it that you find works best?

I've made brews from the powdered root (mix it with water and lecithin and blend), and it's worked great. The taste is very gnarly and it makes my mouth numb so I haven't used it too much... generally I prefer booze or opiates as far as recreational anxiolytics.

But you can't exactly go participate in a class discussion or give a presentation at work after taking shots and popping vics... I mean you can but....

Shots not so much... but a moderate dose of opiates actually makes me very social and talkative and there's no tell-tale odor o' booze. Pretty much I feel 200% on opiates which is why I have to be very, very careful around them.

It depends entirely on you and how weed effects you.
I know some people who can barely function properly after getting blazed on some medical grade cannabis. I also know people who toke up from the time they wake up to the time they go to sleep, and function amazingly well in a high-stress environment. In fact they almost function better while stoned.
Some people, pot kills their motivation and concentration. Some people it has almost no effect, or it increases it. I'm of the latter group.. I can (and do) smoke herb pretty much all day, and do everything normally. We do video production events, put on parties and shows, its usually fast paced and a ton of stress.. and I function a lot better stoned. I can concentrate on one task easier. And I work with tons of things that demands a good short term memory (which I am terrible at anyway even without weed), and an intense focus.
But I've been smoking weed pretty much every day for like the past 14 years or something. So it's almost like my natural state.
So yeah, depends completely on the person. Some people can smoke a little bit, and it does wonders for their ability to focus. Some people it just kills it. You sound like someone that can benefit from a little moderate toking here and there, but maybe I'm wrong.
I always recommend the approach of diet and exercise - eat a healthy, full diet full of life-giving foods, eat complementary herbs that balance the body and get your exercise every day.

Yeah... I really hate how opiates affect me after the bliss of the peak wears off. They bring out a dark, addictive side of me...not to mention the constipation!
At the beginning of this semester I hit a low point with them, popping 7-8 percs one night and then showing up to my first morning class, which I had already missed once due to traffic, and having to leave after 15 minutes to go puke my guts out. I know there are much lower points than that to be reached if you're not careful, which is why I'm glad I don't have regular access to test my willpower.

Oh, college + opiates. I distinctly remember a few occasions of having to sprint out of class to vomit the entire contents of my stomach while my eyes were pinpricks.
Constant availability is definitely a killer.

I remember staring at the tits of my spanish teacher. She seemed sorta flattered. No wonder I got an A and the only thing I learned was how to ask for hash and beer
