What's a good MP3 player for me?
    #11878466 - 01/22/10 11:56 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I got an iPod Video (5.5 Gen) when they first came out. I hate iTunes so I used 3rd party programs to update it which eventually made my iPod act strange regardless of how many times I restored it. The screen is messed up and I believe the hard drive is slightly damaged physically. It freezes up every now and then. I tried using the RockBox firmware but after a while it would freeze and wouldn't let me update the database.

So I'm done with the products Apple has to offer.

I don't use my iPod for videos and I can easily fill up the 30 gig HD with music.

What's a good brand and model MP3 player for me? I like not using clunky programs to add music. A drag and drop interface or being able to use Windows Explorer to add music would be the best. I would LOVE one with a custom EQ. Have any ideas?

What software DO you like? I'd start with what works with that software. The ipod would have worked better if you used it how Apple intended. (IE buy music from them)

A friend of mine has some random mp3 player that uses rhapsody and napster. It is much more combersome and problematic than itunes+ipod.

If you have some other software you really like, just start looking at boxes to see what mp3 player works with it.

Okay, now that's over with.

I used my iPod with SharePod, Floola, Yamipod, and Winamp + plugin for adding music to it. All of them had their own strengths and weaknesses which is why I used so many. I still liked that better than iTunes.

I want a very minimal way to add music. I hate big clunky programs that hog resources. Like I said, adding music by Windows Explorer and dragging your stuff into a folder would be ideal. I'm trying to be a minimalist here.

haha.. i thought the same thing.. ive been using ipods for like 7 or 8 years without using itunes. never had a problem.

the reason i stayed with the ipod for so long is because there is no one else putting out mp3 players with such a high capacity.

i love the zune hardware but you have to use the zune software that it comes with. it sucks worse than itunes and only runs on windows.

archos players are an option only if you like carrying a player the size of a refrigerator.

there are flash based mp3 players that are up to 32gb. if you can easily fill 30gb then i probably wouldnt get that cause you dont have a whole lot of room to expand.

if you can find a creative zen vision m then id probably go with that. dont think they make them anymore. i used to love those little players. pretty sure they made a 60gb version. the only thing with that is you have to use software that supports MTP. unless windows added something to explorer (which is actually entirely possible) youre going to need to use software of some kind. foobar2000 might have an extension.

personally, what i do nowadays is use MPD (Music Player Daemon) on my media server to pipe the output to a shoutcast stream. i use my phone to tune into the stream and use an MPD remote to control it. i dont really have to worry about storage capacities anymore. its got some issues but it will do for now.

The creative zen is pretty solid. I use my blackberry, which is a shitty solution, but convenient for me. When I'm at the gym or whatever I have a 2nd gen ipod nano that does the trick.

On your feelings about MP3 software, I agree, it's not that fucking hard (programatically) to decode an mp3 file and play it, and keep my library
in order. The best one I've found so far has been mediamonkey. Between my roomates and I, we share about 600gb of music that is constantly upgraded. To complicate matters further, it is stored on a opensolaris server over samba, and we all have separate mp3 players that we like to keep in sync. Amazingly enough, we don't have that many problems with it. Anyway, it comes highly recommended.
