PF jars: Dense white on bottom half, greyish mycelium above
    #1187242 - 01/03/03 08:34 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

A couple of my jars look like this... Really good-looking dense white on the bottom but greyish, ugly mycelium on the top of the half-pint jar. They're something like 28 days old, I haven't birthed them yet but they're fully colonized... Any idea of what this means?

Sounds like cobweb.

Yep- sorry you're screwed.
You could try treating with hydrogen peroxide and a lot of hope/luck/intervention of the mushroom goddess.

Doesn't look like it to me. I dunno how that'd happen in the jars only after 3 weeks and not before though.

Hmm... How does that happen? They looked perfectly fine for 3 weeks, then it was just like a density shift.

Hmm, well, I've looked at a lot of contam pictures now and it definitely doesn't look like any of them. The dry layer of vermiculite is intact if that counts. All it looks like is simply varying layers of density. Could this be due to higher moisture content at the bottom half of the jar?

yeah, i suppose. if you open the jar to birth, and it smells like an anchovy's arsehole, throw it out!

if it smells okay, cut off all but the solid white stuff, spray it with dilute peroxide, and either birth that lump as a 'cake' or crumble it and cover with wet stuff (wet vermiculite works). you'll know in a few days whether or not to break out the violins.

If you could get some pics for us it sure would help man. If not then I say to birth them and see what happens. Or you can try to treat them with diluted peroxide. That may work, though I've never had one contaminated jar yet.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to wait about 2 days probably then birth them... Guess it couldn't work. Maybe the varying density will even out. They smell fine.
