 Armillaria gallica on agar

I received a wedge of Armillaria gallica . It really has a very unique growth. Starts off white , then turns a rust brown starting in the middle. One of the more attractive MYC i have grown.
The thing that i was really amazed about was the rizomorphic growth it sent out. They are just like roots. I was putting away my cultures for storage today and noticed. It sent up 2 "roots" that came through the agar and are almost touching the lid! When i looked at the bottom i noticed dozens of these roots going everywhere from the center. I will post some pix when i get back from work.

I see why this species is so virulent at attacking trees! I will have to make sure this one doesn't make it out to the compost pile after i grow it. I think i will be soaking spent blocks in bleach, then to the trash.

Here are some pictures of Armillaria mellea (sensu lato) on agar, I'm guessing it looks quite similar:

Pasteurizing the spent blocks would probably kill it better
That is some crazy looking mycelium

Nice. I'm sure it will get much, much better in the coming days. Those tiny roots should turn into huge tentacles, so you will think about locking them someplace where they can't escape, while you sleep at night.
Does the mycelium already glow in the dark?

Can this mushroom be grown indoors? Or does it require living roots of trees?

It often kills trees, but I have heard that it does not attack trees that are strong and healthy.
For what it's worth, I have seen it fruiting from logs and stumps years after the tree had died.
In my locale, it most often grows on Garry Oaks.
It is famous for black rhizomorphs that look like shoelaces.

Stamets mentions that also.
Once they get started it can be a bad deal if you have tree's by your house. They really mush up the root system and the tree will fall.
Its happened to me with Laetipourus
I always discard my Armillaria mellea remnants in a trash can

Logging areas are not strong and healthy ecosystems. Neither is one's yard. Trees in either area are likely to be highly stressed and weakened.
Common lawn grass and trees are great enemies.

Most the ones I see are in national forest.Within 10 miles of logging usually.
I figure lots of stumps promote lots of Honeys....and logging trucks are good for spreading spores pretty much.
I never stopped to consider that the national forest was not a healthy eco system.
