Giant Praying Mantis?

I recently had an experience on 5 grams in silent darkness of seeing a herd of giant praying mantises. They were were traveling through a desert, rolling with their front limbs huge geodesic spheres covered in a yellow-green film. Inside the spheres was a teeming colony of smaller insects. The mantises would periodically inject material into the spheres with their ass. This vision had a profoundly solid and stable nature to it, and seemed somehow very significant. I could stare and stare and stare, and it all remained solid, no melting or morphing - a truly coherent vision.
I was wondering if any of you had any experiences with giant mantises you'd like to share - perhaps some light can be shed on the nature of these creatures.

Asian and Malayasian Preying Mantis' reach heights of 12 inches and more. I have seen them in collection boxes like they do with bugs, beetles and butterflies.
I once had some photos I took in Penang, Malaysia but they were lost in the mail.
I am sure I can find an image
THis is from the internet google but could not find comparison image

Giant Malaysian Praying Mantis
Hierodula trimaculata
Giant Malaysian Praying Mantis, this vigorous eater is large and typical praying mantis apperance.
What does the Giant Malaysian Praying Mantis look like?
Have you ever seen any of those 1950's B-Movies - where a Colossal 200ft Mantis is terroising New York - pulling down sky scrapers??? - Well, they look just like that - but a bit smaller!!!
The colour can vary from greens, browns and creams. When adult, they can measure upto a whacking 100 - 110 mm in size (dependent on the sex - girls are bigger than boys). They are a heavily built Mantis, strong enough to rip apart and eat fully grown Locuts. Looking very similar to the Giant Asian and Giant Indian Mantis, this is a great large species to keep. Where are Giant Malaysian Mantids from?
Living in Malaysia, they should be maintained in a relatively hot environment, with a temperature of 22 - 30C (71.6 - 86F), with the humidity in the region of 60 - 70%. Tolerant to the temperature and humidity irregularities, this makes them a hardy species. Is the Giant Malaysian Mantis easy to keep?
YES!!! The Giant Malaysian Mantis is very easy to keep, an ideal large species for beginners. But watch out! It's a vigorous eater and will eat pretty much anything that moves (apart from you). They can easily eat fully-grown adult locus in one sitting. The natural habitat for this mantis is shrubs and tree areas, so the cage should be set up in a similar way.
Only keep these together if you have an Oothecas hatch. Remove them into seperate containers when they are 3rd/4th shed Nymphs.

Bbbbbaby you just aint seen nothin' yet. Earthly mantises are bigger than other insects but cosmic mantises are bigger and infinitely more clever than humans.
I think the Mantises will land in 2012--not in December, but in Septermber at BURNING MAN. The Burning Man festival is really the Burning MANTIS festival.
1.) Terrestrial Mantises are the only (macroscopic) organisms ever found at Burning Man
2.) The Burning Man Festival IS slowly but steadily evolving into an event which worships Mantis "Gods" or Extraterrestrials or Inter-Dimensional beings.
3.) Many of the sounds that comprise crunky electro-house music are extraterrestrial in origin.
4.) Raves might make us feel happy and connected, but the aliens are merely experimenting with chemical (MDMA) and sonic (desert trance) ways of pushing our buttons so that they can enslave us all.
5.) Eat ENOUGH mushrooms and you WILL encounter the mantises.

From http://www.erowid.org/columns/teafaerie/page/3/ :
"For instance, I recently had an ayahuasca session that involved an odd conversation with a praying mantis the size of an office building. I didn’t get it at the time. Then, a month later, I remembered a praying mantis that I caught like five years ago at Burning Man, and kept alive in a water jug upon which I had written the phrase “alien ambassador god, handle with care”. I laughed and laughed when I finally figured it out. Do I think there are giant bugs in hyperspace? No. Might it have been some sort of alien ambassador god? Maybe so. It sure cleaned my clock, whatever it was. But whatever it was, it was certainly not what it appeared to be. Anything with two eyes on the front of its head is not a creature that evolved in psychedelic multi-space. That can’t be what it looks like for itself, if such a distinction applies."
I've had my share of far-out, visionary encounters, but what OP describes is so downright awesome...i'm kinda envious for this. A symbiotic swarm consciousness on another planet...i don't know what it could mean to you, but in any case, it's a wonderful metaphor for the psychedelic experience.

That's a beautiful vision - mantises are iconic that way. Had one living in the back yard one time and got to study it up close, very very trippy creature.
During the Jurassic dragonflies (Meganeura) existed with wingspans up to about a meter (the air had more oxygen), and that's about the maximum size possible for insects. Don't know about mantises from that time, though...
