I think many newbies are unaware that mushrooms require no light whatsoever!
(Why isn't this in the faq??)

There has even been a few qualitative studies on the shroomery showing that shrooms without lighting grow larger than with lighting.

This is especially useful for covert closet growing :]

I think for at least some strains of cube's light is important in pinning.

i thought they needed a little light to decide which way to grow.

and this study you speak of, how did the scientists check up on the shrooms? did they use night vision? or did they start them and check up in 4 weeks? OR WAS THERE SOME EXPOSURE TO LIGHT WHEN THEY CHECKED ON THE MUSHIES?!?!?!?

i don't believe that to be true for cubies, i've tried experiments where i've left invitro jars in the dark for months and they never pinned. i believe cubies need at least a brief flash of light every day for a couple weeks to trigger pinning.

Yesterday I posted a question on why I'm not getting a third flush. During my first two flushes I used a clear garbage bag over the top of my terrarium, but my cat recently broke in and ruined that top, and I didnt have anymore clear bags cause I stole that one from work. Anyways, my terrarium had its regular lid on for over a week, it was dark in there, and nothing happened. The only light they got was for fanning and misting. As I posted that yesterday, I was trying out my new plexiglass top. About 3 hours later with the closet light on, whoa, like 10 pins on 3 cakes. Light is important, Anno says so  :tongue:

It may be true that they grow better without light. But they need light to know WHEN TO START PINNING. Why does everyone think it is to show them which direction to grow in? That is gravity's job!

err, try putting your light source under a clear container full o colonized substrate, they will grow toward that light...

He's right. If you case and let light in thru the sides on a clear container, they'll start to pin on the sides, practically ruining your case. Also, its a proven fact (somewhere on this forum, a guy did quite an extensive research project on this).
I believe the light is almost required to initate pinning, but it also showed that they grow ALOT more when not under light.

So take the best of both sides, light in the beginning, after its done pinning, shut it off, and watch it grow :smile:

Exactly you are contradicting yourselves. Without the light the mycelium would not pin at all. Put a cake on its side and give it light. When it pins remove the light source and put the cake up right. As you will see the pin will start turning because it always grows towards the opposite direction in which gravity is pulling. Not towards light...

i've seen fruitbodies growing down, towards the perlite's reflected light against gravity, shrooms are phototrophic and do indeed grow towards light.

how MUCH light do you actually need? I'm starting a stealth grow inside a subwoofer under my desk, would some clear x-mas lights do the trick?

doesn't take much light, a string of xmas lights works fine.
where is the evidence that shrooms grow faster in the darkness ?
i've neen seeing a few people around saying such a thing but no evidence have i yet seen.

somebody a bit ago made a post and it has stages of growth in light and dark and the whole deal.. and about the casing with clear container and you get pins on the bottom.. its not cuz the mushies are growing towards the light its because the light is used to initiate the pinning. and if your casing container is transparent werever the mycelium is reveiving light it will most likely start to pin in those areas..
