Lighting as heating?
    #1185231 - 01/02/03 11:46 AM (22 years, 19 days ago)

Well I just got my mycobags. I know the experienced lot of you are laughing but trust me this saves me time and more importantly space.

My bags will be kept inside a small rubbermaid container which i have made light proof inside a much larger cardboard box. Out side the rubbermaid container there is a small corded light sort of off to the side barely touching the container. For heating I thought perhaps id get a nice reptile heater which wouldn't burn down my house if kept on all day. However to sort of test things out I turned on the light to gauge how hot it will get in the rubbermaid container and its around a perfect 82 - 84 degrees! Because it is light proof can I just keep that light on for a majority of the day? I know the bulbs will burn out and I may even have to get another lamp but its really cheap so I can do it. Is this a major fire hazard? Can I do something to protect myself? If this is true I realize I might have to turn off the light when I leave so the temp might be at 70 sometimes which I have read will probably slow down the process. I also realize things might get a little to dry so I am purchasing some perlite which will accompany the bags in a small container. I'm thinking I should be alright....

If the temps are not steady the myco bags might stall on you.

Either use the reptile heater or make an incubator using a submersible aquarium heater.

There is nothing wrong with myco bags.
I won some from Sporeworks and they worked out pretty good.

I hear that if you submerge part of the jars in water than a retile heater or what have you can not dry it out. Is there any truth to this?

Actually, with my current terrarium setup, I couldn't get a fluorescent light quickly enough, so I resorted to incandescent.  This has worked out surprisingly well.  I've got it set to a point where the lamp is detrimental for keeping temperature up.  I don't think I want a fluorescent now
