Napa valley mushroom pics 1-16-10 (and some questions)
    #11846368 - 01/17/10 10:43 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I went foraging around Napa valley yesterday and came back with some decent shots folks might like to see.  I also have a question about drying mushrooms, particularly the Candy Cap and Pine Spike.  What's the best way to dry these guys without a freeze-dryer or other drying mechanism?  I hear they are both better edibles when dried.  Please share some experience with this?

On to the pictures!  At the bottom are three mushrooms I could not identify, educated guesses would be appreciated.  I did not bring them home for printing - I had too many mushrooms I planned to eat for that.

Yellow Bolbitius (vitellinus)

Turkey Tails (Trametes versicolor)

Melanoleuca sp.

Mycena adscendens

Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus)

Candy Cap (Lactarius rubidus)

Black Elfin Saddle (Hellvella)

Spring Amanita (velosa)

Western Grisette (Amanita pachycolea)

Odd shaped Deceiver (Laccaria amethysteo-occidentalis)
- check out the stalk on this thing!

Gymnopilus Luteofolius
- just pins yet, Ill be back in a few days to Collect these actives for sure.

Lactarius xanthogalactus

Brown Witch's Butter (Tremella foliacea)

Agaricus californicus

Saffron Milk Cap (Lactarius deliciosus)

Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare)

The proceeds - Brought home Candy Caps, Oysters, Pine Spikes, and Saffron Milk Cap.  Also some Turkey Tail to try this tea I've been hearing about.  I'm still to nervous to eat the Amanita's I find, that whole family makes me edgy.

Here are pictures of the three mushrooms I do not recognize, any of these look familiar?

Unknown #1
This one was small, and looked a bit like a tongue from the top.  Growing from a nearly decomposed log.

Unknown #2
I thought this might be Camarophyllus russocoriaceus, or perhaps Marasmius sp.  But its vase-like shape makes me think not.

Unknown #3
This cluster was growing near where I found the Oysters, from the same downed tree.  Based on color and habitat, I would think its a Gym of some sort.  But the very dark stipe/stem does not fit at all.

Thanks for looking, and thanks for the help!

Looks like you had a nice hunt!

Last one looks like it's Flammulina velutipes.

I think you may be right... I'm gonna have to go back and harvest that one for a spore check.  Apparently is a choice edible!  Thanks Obi.

Nice work, Lhun!
Yeah, Obi called it for #3...Flammulina velutipes.
#1 Looks like Phyllotopsis nidulans.
I dunno for #2 looks like a Camarophyllus or Hygrophorus.

Great finds, especially the Mycena adscendens, Amanita velosa and the crazy Laccaria a-o.  I have never found that Mycena before and I agree with your ID.

Your Agaricus californicus might be closer to xanthodermus, hondensis or praeclaresquamosus due to the thick annulus.  It would help to see the top of the cap and any staining reactions.

The Amanitas you found are perfectly edible and there is no reason to be afraid of them as long as you look at them very closely.  The velosa is an especially rare and delicious find.

Dry your candy caps by leaving a fan on them for a day or 2, or on the dashboard of a vehicle.  Not sure why you would want to dry Chroogomphus.

Unknown # 1 is Phyllotopsis nidulans
Unknown # 2 is Hygrocybe virginea
Unknown # 3 is Flammulina velutipes

You seem to be good at identifying mushrooms.  Where did you learn to do that?

Thanks for the kind words Alan (and Bob).  I ended up settling on the ID of Agaricus californicus because the phenolic odor was very faint, and the bruising of the flesh was light (fleeting) yellow.  (I.E. after cut it would slowly turn a very faint yellow - only to fade back to white in a matter of minutes.)  Also the foot of the stipe was not overtly yellowed when I cleaned off the dirt.  The cap was also consistant with californicus in regards to markings - and the young ones I brought home had very bright pink gills.  It's in the trash now anyhow.  I need to find a good place to order/buy some of that KOH.  Seems like its the ticket to fast Agaricus identification.

As for the Amanita's, it's not that I question my identifications regarding them (well I do, multiple times for my own safety).  I'm just a wuss when it comes to actually cooking them up.  Next time I find some Grisette's or a velosa perhaps I'll actually try it for a change.  The velosa in the picture is still out in the field, hidden well under some brush.  It's actually just a quarter-mile from where I left the "Velvet foot / Enoki" I was originally unable to recognize.  I'll have to head out today and grab them both if it tastes as good as you say.

Regarding my identification skills, it's all field/book learned.  I became interested in hunting mushrooms years ago - and every season I make a point to go out with my camera and guide(s) in hand.  At first, I made a point of learning all the local common toxic varieties and a few choice edibles.  Now each trip I try to pick out at least three mushrooms I am not familiar with.  Then I go home and (try) to familiarize myself!  It helps to have a good eye for details / good memory too.  It's a shame I just recently stumbled upon this website, you folks are and amazing resource.

On the way to learn to ID mushrooms... you're doing it right! Keep it up.

As far as eating Amanitas, I'm in the same boat with you. I still have not eaten any Amanitas. And given the number of really good edible mushrooms around I don't feel any particular desire to add them to my list.

On identifying Agaricus species - any time I start thinking I have the hang of it I just get around Rick Kerrigan and in no time at all I'm back to thinking that I don't know beans about them again (at least it feels that way). They're a difficult group at any time.

Happy mushrooming!

I would have second thoughts if I was in the midwest/east coast, but here in CA we only have about 20 Amanita species and the edible ones are pretty easy to ID.

Rick Kerrigan is the man!  He schooled me just last week.

Agaricus is one genus that is fun because its not uncommon to find really strange species.  this one is apparently pretty rare and I found it right next to the road in golden gate park.

I'd recommend the velosa, I haven't heard very good things about grisettes.  You can post the pics on mushroomobserver.org before you eat them for an expert opinion.

You can order it on ebay.  Or if you end up in the south bay I will give you a bunch of sodium hydroxide (and a little KOH) for free.

So I'm cleaning up my area from drying/printing my haul last night and I noticed that some of the prints from the younger specimens of "candy cap" are a slight shade different than the older and larger prints.  The variance is minor, a creamy white vs. a faint yellow.  Is this possible?  Or do I have a mixed batch?  I was very careful to test (odor/milk-color/stipe and cap consistancy) with every one when picking.  Now I dont know...  Advice?

Lhun

Edit:
My kitchen smells soooo sweet right now (where I'm drying these things)

Should be fine.  The closest lookalike is L. xanthogalactus and you probably would have noticed the white latex turning yellow.

Yeah there were a few of the xanthogalactus around, I was able to weed them out on sight - but I cut a few just to watch 'em bleed.  I'm crazy like that. :crazy2:

Thanks again Alan
