Did you use tap water to fill up the tank? Did you add any water conditioners to water?

I agree to just use tap water but wanted to clear up that tank water (of the freshwater variety) after having been cycled for a few months would actually be a very perfect water to use. Almost all heavy metals, salts, chlorine, etc. that is bad has precipitated out and in their place is an abundance of "healthy" bacteria that will prompty right any "wrong" water put into it. That being said, your gonna sterilize it therefore the only advantage is a lot of minerals not being in the water (leaves deposits on jars for example). The biggest problem is that you would not want to scoop good water out of your aquarium. The water your taking out is full of waste and other un-digested (by the bacteria that is) crap like ammonia. This stuff permanently alters pH (unless you adjust it which is time consuming and defeating of the purpose) as far as sterilization is concerned and any ammonia will make it into your jars and immediately cause problems. Bad Idea (TM).

Bad plan, Fish water is bad even for fish, imagine being in a room where u shit over and over, after awile the bad stuff fish shit turns into nitrates witch kill the fish. thats why many tropical fish hobbiest do habitual water changes of R/O water(reverse osmosis) i use the same water for my substrate jars and shit.
no sientific sht used to make it easy to understand, anyone can add on to it if they wish.

Ehhh, forget all of that crap. Just use regular tap water. I've had no problems with it.
