Yes, I used the search. Here's to make it more accessible for future noobies.
Is the gypsum necessary in my grain jars? Unfortunately it's "out of season", and I know I can order it online but before I do that I want to know if it's worth it.

No, but it drastically improves performance and also helps to avoid clumping. I have snow 4 feet deep here and gypsum is readily available. If it's not in stock at your local store, ask them to get it for you. RR

I phoned Home Depot's gardening department yesterday and when i asked for Gypsum, they acted as if i were crazy. They tried transfereing me to the drywall department.
However, they do have lime. Does lime give the same improvement in performance as gypsym?

HD doesn't carry it. Look for local gardening centers. It's worthwhile and cheap.

Home Depot is where I went as well, they told me it's out of season. I'll try Lowe's then, a bit of a longer trip.
Thanks for the info.

Call first, I bet they don't have it-- LOCAL GARDENING CENTERS, as in Mom-n-Pop type places.

Where I live NO ONE even knows what garden gypsum is never-mind sells it.
Actually, the odd 'old timer' knows what I'm talking about but I always get the same response, "Gee, I haven't seen that stuff in years".
moldem, If you can't find it check out the link in my sig below.

I understand what you're saying, but those are hard to come by. Also, Lowe's had vermiculite where as everywhere else didn't. I will call first, thanks.
@nexus thanks for the alternative! I'll check it out.

In a pinch you can get a big bucket of drywall mud - get it wet, set it then smash it up and use it. That's ALL I can find around here, except the occasional small bag of obscenely over priced gypsum. Something like $10 for 5 lbs and they're generally out of stock.

Why people insist on looking at lumber yards for gardening supplies is hard to fathom. Garden centers, as said above is where to look. I've also never been to a feed store that didn't carry it, and big cities also have farm and feed stores. RR

yeah, lowes carries vermiculite. however, it's the really powdery stuff and not the "course ground" stuff that seems to work best...
i encountered the same problem with the gypsum. what i used was drywall (look up drywall tek), but instead of using a hammer and a pillow case, all i did was soak the drywall to peel off the paper and blend it.
note: make sure you don't buy the wrong type of drywall.....

It's not a lumber yard. It's a hardware store that has a "nursery" for plants and gardening.

I'm well aware of what Lowes and Home Depot are, even though our cabin is three hours by Jeep(in good weather) from the nearest one. They have a so-called garden center, much like walmart does. Look elsewhere for gypsum. Any local nursery or feed store worth its salt will have it. If the clerk doesn't know what gypsum is, you're in the wrong store. RR

I thought Home Depot was just a New York thing. I'll check out local stores, thanks.

Fine to medium verm works better. I have no use for course at all, despite bad advice you'll read here to the contrary. Fine verm holds much more water per volume than course verm does, and it also makes a better filter for the top of your jars. If you watch the BRF tek videos on my site, you'll notice fine verm was used. RR
