Drying out the babies
    #1184583 - 01/02/03 07:45 AM (22 years, 20 days ago)

Hey has anyone ever used salts for drying out mushrooms? Would this work, using the kind of salt they use to melt ice on sidewalks.

Or if you used table salt, maybe you could even put them right into it, and let them sit and get the moisture sucked right out. Or would this potenually harm them? Because if it worked, I'm sure people would already be doing this. So I'm assuming this is a bad idea until someone says otherwise.

Actually, this is called the "Desiccant Chamber" Tek. The salt that you speak of is Calcium Chloride, and it is the type that they use to melt snow.

A most effective way of drying cubes is to place them in front of a fan for 24 hours or more (until they're fairly dry) then placing them in a container above the calcium chloride (by using wire mesh). It's important NOT to put the mushrooms directly on the chemical.

Awesome! Thanks!

Because I have alot of that sidewalk salt available, (a huge bucket full)
and I've been working too much lately to get a chance to buy any desiccant. Now I can dry these guys out so they don't go and rott on me.

I dry with a fan for a day then....
I use the damp rid in a tupper ware with a screen over it and a coffe filter on that.  After a flush you can pour it (damp rid) in a cookie sheet and dry it in the oven (low temps-stir a lot) and you don't have to rebuy. just don't let it get soggy before you dry it.
