Casing Question
    #1183815 - 01/01/03 11:39 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I was planning to buy some baking tins to case my cakes in... however I was told later that the aluminum and tin were bad for the mycellium...
Some people recommended to just use plain opaque tuppeware...
What are your takes on this?

Uhhh.. no.

Nothing wrong with alum pans, they won't rust, and i've seen many a casing made with them before on the boards!! ( I might be wrong here, so someone pls correct me if i am!! )

As long as it's clean, .. However.. I'd recomment using something with higher sides so that you can just use a plastic bag to cover it up whithout having to build a seperate terranium.. unless you already have one that is!!

I've never had a problem with aluminum, but I prefer the clear 4 qt tupperware containers.

I prefer plastic tubs. They are more durable and are available in a wider variety of sizes.

Aluminum pans work fine. After a couple uses, the mycelium will eat through them though. Try it and see.  I've also used ceramic coated baking pans, and tupperware containers. Afer a while, the mycelium eats throught the coating on the baking pans. So far, I haven't had any problems what so-ever with the Tupperware containers. All of the above will work fine. Some just last longer than others. For the long run, I'd recommend some sort of plastic/tupperware. It's cheap and readily available.

I always have mycelium eating through the Alum pan after the 2nd flush.

So I have switched to using solid color rubbermaid containers and small mortar boxes.
These become cheaper in the long run...cause they are reusable.
I have also found some great containers at the Dollar Stores.
So if you like to throw things away after using....$1 beats $2.69 for 2 alum bread pans.
