Cake question (growing from bottom)
    #1183993 - 01/02/03 04:47 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

What would be the reason that fruits are growing from the bottom of the cakes instead of the sides & top?

The only thing i can think of would be a humidity problem.

Any thoughts?

This is actually the reason I stopped using cakes after my first attempt with them. I had little or no fruits, except from the bottom. I ended up flipping them over, and let them finish flushing that way. As far as WHY they grew only from the bottom, I'm not sure.

there are probably a few reasons that this occurs. my only logical guess is that water is more prevalent at the bottom because that is where it settles both in the jar and in the fruiting chamber. You can try double ended casing which tends to produce fruit at the top as well and also seems to focus fruiting towards the middle part of the cake. overall, be happy that they are fruiting period.

read the paper stake tek thread just mentioned a few minutes ago

I agree that they grow from the sides and bottom due to higher moisture. If there are no shrooms on top, you could try flipping the cake, and foiling off the bottom and sides, and center a light with a dispersion hood over it. This might make them grow straight up, towards the top, and cause pins to occur on the top as well.

Then again, it might not.

your cakes are upside down. during colonization the fungus differentiates between up and down, when you took them out of the jar and placed them in the fruiting chamber you most likely flipped them.. just turn them back over and you'll be fine.

different cakes may fruit from the top/bottom and/or sides even if they are all placed the same direction. i've seen it.

i agree. i doubt that the fungus establishes up or down in any sense. whre it senses light it may fruit. try changing your light location mid-fruit, the existing fruits will bend towards that light and new pins start out pointed that way. It is not a phototropic fungus (p. cubie) but it is smart enough to grow toward the light.

This will happen if the cake can wick up moisture from the perlite or vermiculite it's sitting on. This can also be a good thing

That's 150 grams fresh from a 400 ml cake sitting on wet vermiculite. These were grown inside a filter patch bag.

Most of my cakes do the same thing. I'm guessing (as was stated before) that the fruits like the moisture by the perlite. It doesn't really bother me...

What about slicing the cakes in half lengthwise and laying them down on the middles?

Although you'd have more surface area, you'd still probably get the same yield you would the other way.
