Casing question.

Im really confused about this. Are you supposed to let the mycelium overtake the casing layer and then inittiate pinning?
I've followed many grow logs and some people say when mycelium pokes through, you should patch it, and then in other logs i see that people let it just take over till its all white.
Some people say this and that about overlay, I just dont understand if its supposed to have a little mycelium poking through, or should the casing layer be fully colonized? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

No. Read http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?display=faq&nr=57&catnr=4&prog=1&lang=en .

FROM FAQ --------------------------------------------- Once the mycelium appears in the valleys of the casing layer, meaning you can see mycelium strands beginning to poke through the casing layer, but the surface of the casing is not yet colonized, you should initiate pinning. The more evenly the valleys of the casing are colonized, the more even of a pin set you will produce.
GOOD LUCK!

If you allow the mycelium to overtake the casing layer, you'll end up with overlay. Just allow it to take a large part of the casing layer, then initiate pinning.

Yo Anno..... while were on this subject ......I have 2 horse dung bulk substrates... bird seed spawn in plastic containers with lids on and a few holes in the lids... The mycelia is literally racing through and across the top. Should I case these?.... verm or verm/peat?..or just let the dung fruit?

I personaly had good results by first letting the dung fruit without casing, then case witht the standard caing mixture.

Thanks for the response...but I`m still confused........ Let the dung fruit, then harvest... then case?

I believe Anno was saying that his method is to let the first flush fruit straight from the dung, and then case. Some people fruit straight from their dung for all flushes, like me. Others skip straight to the casing before fruiting. It's a matter of preference.
Good luck, Jim
