Are my cakes dead?
    #1183849 - 01/02/03 02:29 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I had a dream that I JUST got home from work only to find that the heater in my incubator had malfunctioned and my incubator was 130 degrees inside :frown:. Im guessing it had been that way for about 4 hours. The jars all had silver dollar size patches of magic white stuff on 4 sides. Actually they still do. Is there any hope for survival at all, or are they dead for sure? Remember, this was all in a dream.

good thing it was only a dream because mycelium dies at 104-106 degrees and is permanently damaged somewhere between 90 and 95 degrees. be glad it was only a dream because then you would have to throw out the contents of those jars and start over because the mycelium would most certainly be dead.

draw around the mycelium patches on the
outside of the jars then just monitor growth
to see if they made it.But thermal death is
supposed to occur at 106 ?f so dream or
not i think it got to hot :frown:

Stamets mentions permanent damage in TMC but offers no hard #'s except thermal death limits. His charts show mycelial growth slowing past 86 gegrees and plummeting past ninety. I am the king of overheating. It has happened to me many times in various ways/locations. It has been my experience that (and this is rough and probaly slightly different from strain to strain) just past ninety and growth slows and the mycelium "sweats". Around 92-94 growth will practically stop and further growth (regardless of temperature correction) will be cottony, also the yields will not be as great. After 95 the mycelium is usually permanently damaged so that all growth will completely stop and cannot be started again, if it does it is slow and most likely will not fruit at all, it basically becomes fungi imperfecti. again, different strains experience these symptoms at different temperature levels as some are more heat tolerant ala mexican, florida. i promise that at 130 degrees the mycelium is entirely dead. Thermal death may occur at over 100 degrees but there is definitely noticeable damage at a little over ninety.

I dont know guys...
Its almost 24 hours later and I'm having another dream that some of my jars have about 20% more white magic stuff than they did when I found them baking in the incubator. Maybe the jars werent as hot as the thermometer was reading? I think theres still hope!

Good luck
the air temp might have reached
130 ?F but i could take longer to
heat the jar interiors to the same
So hope you got lucky

if that is the case then consider yourself one lucky f***er and get heating equipment that stands a better chance of not failing on you in the future.

I'm curious how you reacted when you discovered the overheat. Are the jars submerged? If so, Did you immediately dump and replace the hot water? Man, you are so lucky.

I gots a large glass container with an aquarium heater in it. Its sittin in the center of a rubbermaid box with the jars stacked around it. I found half of the water had evaporated out of the container some how and was raining down from the lid of the box. It was steamy and wet  I killed the heater,  took the lid off the container and fanned it out. The temp was at 80 in about 5 minutes. I left it alone for a day. This morning there were still signs of life. YAY!

Where is your thermometer located? The reading part of it should not be touching anything.
