A little casing advice/reminder
    #1183825 - 01/01/03 11:53 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I just went re-reading the casing FAQs, especially the "casing for dummies" one.

A couple of these FAQs neglect to mention something that is VERY important, so I thought I would mention it here cause theres so much casing talk right now (And I found out the hard way)

Heres what you need to remember:

Sterilize your vermiculite!
Just cause its coming straight out of a new bag doesnt mean its sterile.
Theres a couple of easy ways to sterilize it: One is to over-moisten it just a bit, then lay it out on a CLEAN cookie sheet or baking pan and pop it in the oven at 220 degrees for 30 or 40 minutes.
My favorite way is to put it into a plastic container, like a five-pound cottage cheese container, with a lid, moisten the verm, then put it into the microwave for 10 minutes, stopping and stirring it after five minutes.

THEN, with either method you used, as you apply the vermiculite layers, give them a healthy spraying with H2O2. This will help hold back contams.

Sometimes instead of water I use H2O2 to moisten the vermiculite, or perlite.

Not sterilizing your vermiculite invites a whole lot of problems, mostly cobweb problems. I think cobweb mold lives in vermiculite bags or something.

Now Id like to know if anyone has ever bleach-dunked a casing? And what where the results?

i believe that sterilizing the verm is not absolutely nesecary(wrong spelling)! i made my first 3 casings without sterilizing and they all have healthy fruits now:-)

I've never sterilized my verm.

some bags are perfectly sealed and sterile, others are not.  Good advice to play it safe.

I pasteurize or sterilize all my casing material once it is mixed together.

Do what works for you.

ive tried 3 casings, all lost to green + cobweb mold, so i think ill stick to cakes until i feel confident enough to try another casing. Me and casings must not get along well =(

h2o2 DOES hinder mycelium to some extent. the mycelium has to produce peroxidase to "kill/convert" the peroxide before moving on. Think just up and leaving for aparty or taking a shower and then going to that party. Took you just a tad longer to get there but you'll feel much better when you get there. (bad analogy, I know)

Hmm The Man has about 7 more four-jar casings to do. I guess he should start sterilizing his verm :\

I found a ceramic container with a airtight lid with a closeable vent hole. I left the vent hole open and when sterilizing my 60/40 in the microwave it blew up! DONT use ceramic dishes when microwaving

What about baking the verm before you add the water? That way I know I won't make it too moist or dry after its done baking. Thanks.
