DPD On High After Record Drug Busts Police Seize More Than $15 Million In Drugs In Past 2 Months ClickonDetroit.com updated 1 hour, 3 minutes ago DETROIT - The Detroit Police Department has seized a record amount of narcotics, marijuana and drug money in the past few months.
The latest bust of nearly a kilo of cocaine from a home has the police department experiencing its own high: a record-setting number of drug busts in a two-month span.
The department has gotten more than $15 million of drugs off the streets and out of the hands of drug dealers.
"The significance of it is that you're going after quantity mid-level dealers. You're going down the distribution chain, and sometimes you've upset a lot of activity," said Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans.
The latest bust was made when officers responded to a domestic abuse call at a residence.
"It wasn't a narcotics raid; these were two guys, in a scout car, who responded to domestic violence, and that became something better," said Evans.
In November, DPD made several large drug busts. The first was during a traffic stop. Officers discovered 20 pounds of packaged marijuana in a vehicle. The driver was found a short time later hiding in a car a few blocks away.
About $662,000 in suspected drug money was found Nov. 9 in a duffel bag after a tip on narcotics activity at a Detroit motel.
Also in November, DPD made one of the biggest drug busts in decades: 14 kilograms of cocaine, which is worth an estimated $6 million.
More than $200,000 in cash was also found in that drug bust.
A few days later, 5 kilograms of cocaine was confiscated and a man was arrested in what police said was a related case. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds.
Not long after, 1,300 marijuana plants were confiscated from a grow operation inside of a home.
Evans said the busts do have one negative impact on the community.
"On the other side of it, once it gets disrupted and paranoia sets in -- who snitched on me -- and then sometimes you get a spike of violence," he said.
Despite the accomplishment, Evans said the department's work is far from over.
"At the end of the day, it's citizens' participation. I am not really seeing that yet, but I'm hoping the significant seizure will change the way they see the department does business," said Evans.

"better?"
I suppose some could call it that.
