Buy a fully submersible one. Yes parts of the cord can be underwater.

hot, yaeh thats the one i was looking at. im putting it at the bottom of the rubbermaid container and not against the side. so a good part of the cord was gunna be underwater. i just wanted to double check.

i use it like this right now. take the plug OFF the wall prior opening the incubator though, to eliminate a slight chance of risk.

I happen to have a water pump, and I would recommend some method of moving the water. I tried with out and with the pump, and the pump speed up temperature modifications as well as eliminates cool spots. I have tested every spot in my incubator, and every one of them is 85 degrees. thats all 12 places I have placed it and all 24 times I checked the temp.

sorry i just wanna confirm this. ok. 2 big rubbermaid containers. the heater will be on the bottom on the outside container. this container will be filled with water and the second container will be put inside of it. the whole heater and much of the cord will be underwater. i will purchase a submersable heater. this heater wont burn a hole into the container will it? itll be in close range to it. i dont wanna somehow start a fire or soemtihng at night will im sleeping. this is my major concern.

Well, that all depends on how hot you want your water to be?

Unless you have a heater that goes up to a couple hundred degrees Fahrenheit, I've never heard of plastic melting in less than 212 F

The only real risk of burning the plastic
could be if you allowed the water to evaporate
then the glass heater casing can get very hot.
As long as you top up the water and keepan eye on it you
will be fine  also unplug the heater and allow it to
cool before taking it out the water because they
can crack under sudden temp changes.Same goes for
puting it in the water dont plug it in till its in the water

If you buy a new one, it will come with a mounting bracket,, made of 2 suction cups, that you can use to secure the heater to the bottom of the 1st container. this way it won't touch the container at all.

But again, don't worry as long as it's submerged!!

ps: Hang your power cord so that water won't drip down the cord and get to the pwr outlet.. have the middle of the cord higher up.

thanks everyone. i feel alot more secure now. this was my only hang up about this method of incubation. in about a month hopefull ill have my first shrooms ive grown all by myself.

oh yeah. one last question. i might as well ask in here rather than start a new subject and clutter things up. when im sterilizing the jars, i have 4 holes in the top. should i leave these exposed or should i cover with loose foil, tight foil? how does everyone do this.

Cover the holes up for Pressure cooking or steaming to stop excess water getting in.Use either foil with an elastic band, tyvek or micro pore tape.

cover all 4 holes with tape ( duct tape, wraping tape,, electrical tape,, whatever you got ) then cover the whole thing with foil!

Close the lid on your jar shut, then open it 1/8 to 1/4 turn. then boil or sterilize with a pc if you are doing grain!

good luck!
