Paracetamol tops the overdose list [UK]
    #11826567 - 01/14/10 01:15 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Paracetamol is known as Tylenol in the US. So when we read reports and studies from scientists that illegal drugs like MDMA and cannabis are far safer than Tylenol this is why...

Paracetamol tops the overdose list
January 14, 2010 - thisisnorthdevon.co.uk

PARACETAMOL was the drug most commonly associated with overdose admissions to North Devon District Hospital in the past year, figures reveal.

Between December 2008 and December 2009 there were 648 recorded accident and emergency admissions connected with overdose at the Barnstaple hospital.

Overall there were an average of 54 admissions every month related to drug overdose.

The statistics do not include alcohol poisoning, which is a common cause of emergency admission.

Detailed information about only 133 of these incidents was included in a response to a freedom of information request made by the North Devon Journal .

Of those 133 incidents, 63 (47%) were paracetamol overdoses and 11 (8%) were connected with heroin.

The remaining 59 incidents were associated with 43 other substances, including illegal drugs such as ecstasy (one case), prescription medicine such as the antidepressant Prozac (one case), and over-the-counter remedies such as ibuprofen (four cases).

It is not recorded which incidents were accidental overdoses or deliberate attempts at self-harm.

The frequent appearance of paracetamol in overdoses reflects a national picture.

A non-fatal overdose of the drug can cause serious liver damage, although there might not be any symptoms in the early stages.

The drug should always be sold with information about dosage attached.

you don't need much to OD on that. You're limited to two packets of 16 tablets in the UK in most shops (the legal amount is 100 tablets i think, but all supermarkets and major chains limit it much lower than this) but that's more than enough to kill you. one of my mums best friends daughters committed suicide aged 16 by taking around 100 or so tablets.

god knows why people use paracetemol to kill themselves, it's a slow and painful death.

i know. she knew the pain already too - she'd tried to commit suicide with about 50 tablets a few months before but the doctors had managed to save her. pretty horrible.

And this fails to broach the fact that tylenol is wretched on the liver in regular / high amounts, and ESPECIALLY in combination with alcohol - a combination that people unwittingly consume all the time.
