Time for Mycelium to Surface in Casing?
    #1182606 - 01/01/03 08:58 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

How long does it take for mycelium to surface in a casing. Its already been a week and some mycelium has grown to the top, but not poked through yet. Theres also other stuff that looks like cobweb, but its not all over the casing. Is this the beginning of mycelial growth?

and to answer your question 7-10 days depending on strain and incubating conditions

... and depth of your casing layer. The first time you case it is difficult to tell the difference between cobweb and mycelium.

Thank you. My temp is about 80?F and the casing layer is about 3/4-1in. thick. I will post a pic if I can obtain a high-enough resolution digital camera. Also, I want to spray it with a H2O2/H2O mix just in case, because from what I hear H2O2 is good to use if you are unsure if you have cobweb or not. With a 1.5% H2O2 solution, to what ratio should I dilute it with water as to not kill the mycelium, if this is even possible.

My most recent case, which was cased last Friday (5 days ago) shows about 7% of the surface area having mycelium on it. When I prepared the substrate, I added the water to it as a 1:20 part peroxide / distilled water mix, using 3% peroxide. It does not show any signs of infection, and apparently does not harm the mycelium either.

I have this chamber at 78-79 degrees, and approx. 95% humidity.

This peroxide / water mix is definitely recommended; but I'm not sure what others think.
