SWIM was wondering if it was an exceptionally bad idea to communicate about illegal drugs and their manufacture over Gmail?

If not, can anyone recommend a user-friendly message encryption arrangement?

SWIM was considering Cryptophane, but it's a bit cumbersome.  Then again, so is losing one's liberty over a chemical substance.

This message brought to you by an overly-paranoid SWIM, SWIMing behind an anonymous post.

Well I wouldn't recommend it, but I don't think that it specifically would get you busted either.

There is no reason not to use Gnupg.

It adds a minute or so of overhead, but the extra security is well worth it.  Its not just that they can't read your email - If you use gnupg the other people you are working with will understand that you are serious about security and will be less likely to narc on you.

The Cryptophane gnupg wrapper looks like a good way to make gnupg a bit easier.  Its already really easy, gnupg -e, but having a button to click can't hurt.  Especially if it allows you to get more people using it.
