I'm going to talk to a lawyer asap anyway, but I just recorded a telephone conversation that would help swing my way if played to an arbitrator or whomever, I don't know what the civil court process is (America). The recording contains statements about the hypothetical defendant's personal character that would help to discredit him.
He's saying he doesn't owe me several months of rent and utility money (he was a friend that i helped through hard times) because our agreement was that he'd supply me with heroin ludicrously absurd claim that he will not be able to substantiate other than anecdotally per himself i didn't know he was a junky when i moved in with him

Was he aware he was being recorded?
If not, I'm not sure if it'll be admissible.
If he can't pay for it, try to take him to Judge Judy or some other televised courtroom. They'll determine whether or not he actually owes it, and then the show will pay for it.

unaware, hence the "Secretly recorded conversation" part in the title
As far as going on Judge Judy, I have a taping scheduled right after I go on Jerry Springer

AFAIK only one party has to consent for a secretly recorded conversation to be admissible as evidence.

The laws on wiretapping vary quite a bit by state. You don't want to admit to a felony when you show your evidence.
I am not sure if illegally obtained evidence is admissible or not.
I doubt you'll get the money. He probably doesn't have it or would rather spend it on heroin than pay even if he loses the lawsuit.
