My plants look really skinny compared to the other pictures I see on the net... what am I doing wrong?

I just topped the two other ones I hadn't topped. I hope they'll become more bushy.

However, is there any other part of the plant I can cut to get it to produce more leaves and stems?

I woried about the same thing, too. Budding they looked ' fatty' but still not that much. Ohyes and watch out for male plants.

Oh, so it's mainly during flowering that they produce leaves?

Phew! I'm setting it up right now. That fluo lamp really was a bitch to install. Stupid cheap plastic

Those plants better be happy, for all the trouble I'm having doing this!

If I were you, I 'd get the plants closer to the tube.. to move the fluo, just put a box or something under the pots to get them to a higher level... the long stem must be due to the small bulb... and there must be mostly sativa... but good job!!! these should come out fine!

How will you cover up the smell when they bud? I would use a scrog grow if you have limited light and space.

Why would I want to cover the smell?

It's in my basement, and it could without a doubt use a little weed perfuming!

I'm not worried about cops or anything. It's all good.

whoever said put the plants closer the the tube is a smart guy...you can put them right up next to the tube.

you still NEED those other lights right on the plant....you're doing everything right, but it's all about light. check out homedepot for some 70watt HPS security lights....they're not that expensive....but i don't know you're budget. www.insidesun.com has some CHEAP ass lights.

while at home depot, check out some MYLAR film to reflect as much of all that light as possible. your plants will make love to you for getting them mylar....especially with such small amounts of light.

it looks like they're trying hard.

Your plants looked stretched cause of the light you had originally used. More intense light with wavelengths in the Blue Spectrum and some in the red would have caused your plant not to stretch and stay more small and bushy.

As for lighting: Your fluoros should be "plant light fluoros" which means they'll shine a violet/blue wavelength mostly. This is best for the money. HPS and sunlight obviously has a full spectrum with lots of Red in addition to violets and blues. Red is also important for plant growth as Chlorophyll uses some and accessory anabolistic pigments called carotenoids (B-Carotene for example) use it too to produce energy.

My advice: set up your 60w plant light in addition to your fluoros so it gets some reds too, also setup some tin foil to reflect that wasted light from the fluoro that's just shining up into the ceiling and in other directions down on to the
plant.

BTW, have you fertilized it?

Don't use foil. It can reflect hot spots. Use white paint. Of course with just fluorescents that probably won't be a problem.

he'd have to get cardboard, thick cardboard actually, and paint it. Just use foil the fluoros won't get too hot.

With his stated budget all i've suggest is about the best he can do.

Heat from a fluoro is minimal. It does little to no damage.

A box of what and where?

Psylo33 or someone suggest putting a box under the pot in which the weed is growing from to move it closer to the fluoro. That's, of course, not out of his budget - i would assume.

If you're suggesting boxing in the light or whatever (and painting it on top fo that), then that's just ridiculous. The aluminum foil will be just fine on the fluoro they don't get that hot. And the foil will reflect much better.

usually the smaller lights have the ballast enclosed in a small box with the light.
seeking out small wattage hps and mh lights can be silly tho.  70 watts can be had for 35-60 bucks or so, and don't do much (one plant or two), but the spectrum and the intensity make a huge diff.  i have seen 100/150 watt hps for 80 bucks at lowe's, in a plain cardboard box with no labeling, including ballast.  that's much better.  then it's a hop skip and a jump to 250's and 400's....shop for used, the 400's are common and cheap (think security and street lights), and the bulbs can be had for 20 bucks or so.
all in all, fluoro's are not so great,  veggie growth is not so vigorous, and flowering seems to take quite a bit longer and produce wispy, light airy "buds".
if you insist on sticking with the fluoros, i would hope that you read some stuff about  lumens and intensity.  more than 3 inches from the actual fluoro bulb and the intensity is not enough to grow anything.  it helps to have the plants all at an even height so that you can keep the tops of the plants within 2-3 inches of the bulb.  they will grow right into the bulb with no harmful effects except a little drying out (if you are not attentive enough).
the boxes and books and bricks you use to raise the plants to the light can be shifted every few days to lower them and adjust for the growth.

i have to say, you really have to have time on your hands and a very limited budget to get a decent amount of herb from fluoros and bag seed, but it can be done.    it makes a huge diff when you spend a smidgeon on a light, and the genetics cinch the deal.

good luck, hope this helps some.

Re: First grow! (pics!!) - UPDATE [Re: viscid]
    #1277876 - 02/04/03 11:05 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Hey! It's been a while.

Two of the plants, the biggest one and the smallest one, turned out to be males. I killed them.

The other one is a female. It's doing nicely, I think. I can't wait for my second grow. I'll get better lamps and set this up in a better place.

New pictures!
