Fruiting chamber ?
    #1181274 - 12/31/02 05:59 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Hello!
I've made a little drawing (don't laugh, I'm not good at it) about a fruiting chamber, actually, the one that I want to build. Do you think it could work?

looks good... make sure the seal between the cover and the chamber is tight...and it looks like youre going to basically case the floor of the chamber, or will there be some kind of shelf above the perlite? Id use a baking pan a few inches deep that matches the dimensions instead, so if anything goes wrong, you can remove it... all in all it looks decent... good luck!

Well, I plan to fuit shiitake blocks and other things like that...
I wanted to put shelfs or something like that on the perlite.
Do you think there is enough air circulation?
One exit from the airpump at the bottom the other one near the cover...

Edit: My grammar.

You need a way for c02 to leave the chamber. You can accomplish this by drilling holes near the bottom and stuffing them with pollyphil or whatever the stuff is called.

What if you install a blower on the cover (to bring fresh air) and another small blower at the bottom of the terranium? You only let them blow for a few minutes, then the humidity will raise again.

Well too bad if you dont wanna drill you gotta fan. They aren't too expensive just take a drill to it and put two holes adjascent to each other and stuff them with poly---uhhh-- ... You know.

mushmush, i know you're not stupid enough to use the drill if you have a glass tank. if you had to use a glass tank, you'd be screwed for entry and exit holes for air circulation. get fanning, fanboy! assuming you don't use glass, make sure the exit hole is at the bottom, as CO2 sinks. may as well make the entry up high.

what's that heater thing you have in there? a submersible under the perlite? that means you'd have to keep lots of standing water in the tub. not good, as contams like to swim.

shiitake mushroom blocks, eh? sound fun. i grow shemiji. a most diverting and nutritionally advantageous hobby!

You can drill glass using a good carbide drill bit... practice on something to get the hang of it... you can also just "blow a hole" through glass using a small torch.

Well, there is not question about drilling holes in aquariums (why on earth would I do such a thing?). I don't have an aquarium but a box, which is made of **plastic**.
I'll drill a few holes at the bottom and maybe place another filter there.  :smirk:

Now, the heater... It is made of an aquarium heater (100 or 150 watts I think) sumerged in an hermetically closed bottle ( there is water and hydrogen peroxide inside). The heater will be placed in a corner...

Now, I have oysters who might fruit and I have some enoki's going on. But I'll try crimini's as well.

What I have seen work well is an aquarium air pump. Get one that is somewhat waterproof, and put it in the bottom of the terrarium, or aquarium, or whatever. Run the hose up and out of the container. Because CO2 is heavy and goes to the bottom, the aquarium pump will pump it off of the bottom of the chamber and out through the hose...so no holes are needed, unless you wanna get fancy with it.

My buddy has two fruiting chambers made out of rubbermaid containers, and both have air pumps sitting on the bottom, on a plastic lid that sits on the perlite, and the hose goes up and through a hole in the lid. This creates a constant low-circulation of air and gets rid of the CO2. Fresh air is brought in through a filtered hole in the lid.
