Who has a telescope

I have a 4-inch reflector with an equatorial mount (I believe that?s the correct terminology) it has been a passion of mine for a long time now to watch the stars and other bodies in the nighttime sky. The Orion Nebula is one of my favorite wintertime objects.

Don't currently have a telescope (practically useless here in nyc with all the light pollution) but have a degree in astrophysics...

I have one of those telescopic pirate telescopes. It doesn't do too much in terms of getting a better look at an object, but it does eliminate the light and allow you to see what you normally couldn't see even when there are no stars in the sky.

I live in the North Bronx and the viewing is not too bad because I'm about 21 miles from Manhattan. The viewing is much better when I go upstate though. if you don't mind my asking what do you do for a living with a degree in astrophysics? I work in the Aerospace Industry.

I don't have one but I did purchase the new edition of Sky and Telescope. Have you had a chance to see Saturn's ring?
btw, if you work on the Island we have worked for the same company.

Can you pinpoint specific coordinates?

Yes, that's what the mount does as opposed to a regular tripod the equatorial mount must be set up level to the ground. It has a built in level. Then you must find the North Star, which is not too difficult even though it's fairly dim because it does not move in your finder's scope. After finding the North Star you set your mount to the proper coordinates for it on your mount. Then you can move the scope to a given object provided you have a star chart that is current and the time is correct. The chart will give you the right ascension and declination coordinates of any object visible from your latitude.
Its not really that hard to do once you get the hang of it.

Could you aim it in the direction of planet x and tell us if you see anything? Thanks.

Coordinates will be updated when requests for these updates come in. Since early 2001, when the 12th was first visible from observatories, such requests have been frequent. The coordinates are listed with the latest date at the top of the page (except for the Mar 3, 2003 coordinates that were given in 1997). Due to the light being from the 12th being primarily in the red spectrum, and the tendency of this light to bend readily, the exact RA and Dec for your location will probably vary slightly from those given depending on your position on the globe. Movements in the RA and Dec also take into account changing factors in the solar system that bend red light. Look around the spot slightly.

I would think that a medium power telescope would be required.

i have one of the telescopes my grandfather built. im not sure what kinds of stuff it has. it has a motor built to track a certain path,(maybe set coordinates) but it doesnt work anymore. he also has a huge 7 foot telescope that is shaped kind of like a backwards z. but something happened and it got messed up and so he had to rebuild all this stuff for it but he got alzheimers and died and never got to finish it. he never went to college and read his way to building all these telescopes but im not too familiar with it all. he built all his own optical machines and made prisms and what not. heres a pic of some prisms ive collected from his shop.

Thats amazing that he was able to build a telescope of that size, maybe someday you can learn enough to repair them and put them to use.

Telescopes are great. I have a 13.1-inch altazimuth, but I haven't been taking it out as much as I'd like. The problem with bigger telescopes is the effort involved in setting it up and putting it away - it discourages you from doing it unless you're going to spend at least a couple hours.
M42 has always been one of my favorites. I started with a 4-inch originally. This time of year you should make sure to check out the open clusters along the Milky Way. And don't forget M31 and M33.
Speaking of stuff to see with telescopes, who's seen the new comet, C/2002 X5 (Kudo-Fujikawa)? It's currently moving across Hercules towards Aquila, magnitude about 6.5. By the end of January it could be brighter than Saturn, although difficult to see because it'll be close to the Sun. After conjunction it'll swing south to be a southern hemisphere object and fade very rapidly.
-------------------- Happy mushrooming!
