Substrate jars too wet?
    #1181020 - 12/31/02 02:18 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

sup guys, my friend just made six 1/2 pint jars and they all seem too wet, they all got blobs of wet goopy tops, under the dry verm. My friend uses the EXACT pf rec.  The only thing my friend did this time that he has not in the past, is he didnt use them the next day after making them.  He waited about three days, and he didnt take the tin foil off of the jars while they were cooling, could this have cuased the excess water build up?  Are these jars going to be ok to inc, my friend has limited resources and it sure would suck if he just ruined 6 jars  :frown:

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Ummm... if they contam after only 3 days... something is WRONG!!!!

you should be able to have them sit for a few weeks without contams..

As long as they have not contaminated , and that the bottoms are not totally soggy.. go for it, verm and brf are real cheap, so if there are any doubts, start over. and save your spores!!

I usually leave the foil on them, period. til end of colonization! this should not be a problem.. that's why the foil is there in the first place.. to keep the water content of your jars intact!! ( keep water out when pc'ing, and water in after you are done!! )

verm is hard to get around here this time of year, my friend had to drive 45 min to get some, and it was fine, and they only had three bags left...... but the jars dont smell, well they do, but of brown rice and verm.... and only the tops under the dry verm are wet, the bottoms fine. I was gonna say three days is very fast, but my friend noticed that the water seems to be spreading out evenly, the wet spots are still there, but seem to be going away.

I had the same problem because I didn't tape the holes before I sterilized the jars. I waisted a lot of spores because i innoculated them anyway. I agree you should start over. The jars arn't worth it now. If the mix is right the jars should last for weeks before innoculation.
Good Luck!
