Immokalee Slavery In Florida
    #11807840 - 01/11/10 12:50 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

The BBC World Service radio program "World Have Your Say" did a show on how some illegal immigrants are enslaved by their employers(keeping them locked in areas and not letting them leave etc...

"We’ll be your host today for the BBC’s “World Have Your Say,” which is great, though the reason we are hosting the show isn’t so great: There have been several federal prosecutions for slavery, involving over 1,000 workers, in the past dozen years here in Florida, earning our town the title of “ground zero for modern-day slavery” from federal civil rights prosecutors.

So, as your host, we’d like to start the conversation today with a question: If there were two tomatoes in the store, one labeled “Picked by workers paid a living wage and treated with dignity” and the other labeled “Picked by workers paid a poverty wage, subject to verbal and physical abuse, and in the most extreme cases, forced to work in conditions of modern-day slavery,” would you buy the tomato possibly picked by slaves?
That’s a question we at the Coalition of Immokalee "

Calling them slaves is the height of stupidity. No-one forced them to enter a country illegally.

I'd choose the less expensive tomato.

Seeing as I think people entering a country illegally should be shot on sight by a sniper, I'll not feel sorry for tomato pickers that have brought their fate upon themselves.

I think you're right.  They should be sent home where there is no chance that they will be "exploited".

Right. Try entering another country illegally. When caught, tell the authorities you wish to be treated the same way illegals are treated in the USA.

Let me know how long it takes them to stop laughing. Then keep track of the amount of time they spend beating the shit out of you.

Kill them before they cross the border. Word will spread. The invasion will stop.

Leave the bodies where they fall so the stench will help the other shitbags be aware of the fate that awaits them if they keep going.

I missed this the first time. The tears from the laughter must have temporarily blinded me.

Who forced them to come here? Were they kidnapped and forced across the border against their will?

if they're undocumented they shouldnt be here and they damn sure
shouldnt be working, as they've violated the first, who cares what the
hell happens to them, they're not my concern other than the fact that
they're stopping legal immigrants and US citizens from getting jobs

they volunteered to cross the border illegally
they volunteered to work illegally
they volunteered to do so for low wages and decided to call it slavery

fuck them and their bleeding little hearts, they're illegal aliens
striking to get a better wage, seeking entitlements that citizens dont
get, fuck them for being lying volunteers

the same ones that forced them to become alcoholics
the same ones that forced them to start high debts

it all boils down to one thing... they lie about their choices
slaves dont get paid, these illegals do

"For a major company like Burger King not to pay that additional penny and raise workers' wages and improve their conditions is unconscionable."

Actuall they're here because the snuck in over the border because the places they came from were relentless shitholes.  Some of them even snuck in from Venezuela and Bolivia.

Your ignorance is stunning.  Big business hires very few illegals.  Most of the illegals work for small construction companies or janitorial companies or restaurants or farms on a per diem basis with no taxes involved.  If they don't like it they can fuck off back to the shitholes from whence they came.  If they turn themselves in they get a free ticket. Sayonara.

As far as abuse, around here they get $100 a day, tax free, plus lunch for an 8 hour day.  That works out to around 13-14 an hour.  Depending on how much you spend on lunch.

What the fuck are you talking about?  Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything.

And no, actually they can't get much work on commercial buildings.  Those are usually union.  Unions don't much care for illegals.  Do you have any fucking idea of what the real world is at all or do you just struggle through Julio Cesar Chavez's memoirs for imaginary grievances?

And, oh yeah, in case I forgot to mention it in this post:

They can always fuck off and go back to the shitholes from whence they came if they don't fucking like it here.

And, just in case you want to pull your idiot race card, that goes for the Eastern Europeans, too.

Zappa, you seem to be forgetting throughout all your pissy ranting that the reason we have these immigration problems in the first place is that NAFTA has caused thousands and thousands of farmers in Mexico to become homeless and broke because they can't compete with the US multinationals that moved in. I'd LOVE to know what your reaction would be if you were a Mexican farmer in this situation; especially one living near the US border...

Remember when you were 5 and your parents told you to stand in someone else's shoes? It's not an irrelevant concept just because you learned it when you were young.

By the way, you seem to be saying that because *their* home countries are "relentless shitholes" they no longer have the right to rationally desire working somewhere better to feed their families.
Cuz, ya know, it's their fault. And stuff. Right?

By the way, this reminds me:

--------------------
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society"
Jiddu Krishnamurti

"That's a marvelous structural technique of propaganda... It is only in folk tales, children's stories, and the journals of intellectual opinion that power is used wisely and well to destroy evil. The real world teaches very different lessons, and it takes willful and dedicated ignorance to fail to perceive them.”
Noam Chomsky

of course... all the automakers that moved to mexico are importing
canadians to build the cars, none of that mexican grown produce is being
sold in the US, it's all dumped in the ocean
