Anyone used this Coir?

I am an old hand and primarily stick with straw and or hpoo mixes but wanted to try out Coir finally. I bought a bale of this stuff: http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO125_Miracle_Mulch_Compressed_Brick_2.html
I pasteurized it and it is colonizing it fine - just curious if anyone else has ever used this particular brand of Coir.

I have read about there being trich added to the coir used for gardening, but I am not sure if this is BS. I use the stuff from the pet store, its pretty cheap, and works great. Good Luck!

yeah, it does make a ton of substrate! i bought this stuff at Agway for $8. It is 8.8 pounds dry weight. More spendy than straw by far but way easier to work with....
as for the trich added - i would imagine if a company goes through the trouble of adding trich they would state that loud and clear on the packaging simply for marketing purposes alone. the first batch i did with this stuff colonized fine with zero green mold signs.starting to knot up now. fruit bodies should be coming very soon.

I personally think bed a beast is the best brand, followed by eco earth. You can pick them up at a pet shop.

Safe to use yes...a quality product no. I've noticed different brands hold different amounts of water. Eco Earth for instance runs on the dryer side and looks more brown. While Bed a Beast is a blackish brown and stays that way due to it's added moisture content. I prefer the later due to the fact it stays moist the longest, I've never had any sort of mess ups with it and it's all around a great product (not a lot of chunks, twigs, or seeds in the ground up matter). Seriously I've had living life forms (plants) sprout in monotubs with other brands.

Well I think it is all the same product just packaged differently. I am new to it, of course, but not new to marketing.
The stuff I linked too is growing out just fine.
I was mainly interested in trying this stuff to begin with because of its supposed anti-green mold properties. So far, so good

I have not used that particular coir, but this brick from the same vendor... http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO114_Coco_Peat_45_Cu_Ft_Brick.html
... is what I have been using for the last 2 years. I stil have 1/4 of it left. It expands to around 670 quarts.
I also agree that it likely does have added trichoderma. Be sure to pasteurize.
I disagree that petshop coir is always better to use. The salt/TDS content of that coir can sometimes be very high. The salt content of this coir is lower, comparatively (verified with my own TDS meter, different samples 1:1 by volume with water.) I wish I'd have written down my results on that, but maybe next time I come across a couple petshop bricks I'll do so.

I'm not sure what brand name I use I call it bed a beast but it is something totally different anyway the packaging says it's 100% coconut husks and it is large chunks..had me worried the first time I used it because it had some quarter sized chunks of husks..the Myc. ate right through the stuff! awsome..I try to stay away from some of the others because if you read the ingredients it's really a mix of coir/peat moss and some other stuff..And Yeah I stay away from gardening coir=No Good.....e

Usually 2-3 dry ounces per 6 quarts per tub of substrate, but I've gotten up to 4 when supplementing with composted chicken poo.

UPDATE on the brand of Coir originally mentioned in the thread
First batch(one mentioned earlier in thread):
Started knotting and then when I misted it it went GREEN! I think this was NOT due to "added" trich in the substrate but more than likely due to the fact that I used ridiculously low spawn rates (1/2 pint to 18 quart of coir) which resulted in a weak mycelium network that once, upon misting, became damaged and susceptible to attack.
Second Batch:
I Just wanted to update everyone who might be interested in this brand of Coir. It is very chunky to say the least but all of my tubs colonized in 2-1/2 weeks. I used 4 pints of PE rye grain spawn to about 18 quarts of coir. They are all starting to knot up now and look like they will produce quite nicely. This time I will not water during the knotting stage although it is quite apparent that the mycelium network is much much stronger than the previous attempt.
Things I will do different next time:
1) Add manure (10% by volume). I think this will give a more even run during spawn stage plus add extra nutrients - mainly nitrogen. 2) Manage moisture a bit better - this stuff holds a shit ton of water. I think with a tad less water the colonization time would be hastened with or without a manure additive.
Will update this thread with final yields as they come in just so all you Coir Heads can keep a running tally

What I like so far is the water "problem". By that I mean usually we are fighting to keep our substrates hydrated - with Coir, or at least this brand of it, moisture retention is quite good. Until now I exclusively used pasteurized straw as my substrate and it was always an uphill battle to keep that stuff properly hydrated. With straw there are two main problems:
1) To much moisture leads to really slow colonization time and enhanced mold growth 2) Not enough moisture leads to drastically reduced yields
I think Coir might be my choice for future substrates simply because 1) It is far more compact in its dry state than straw 2) It makes far less a mess of my place! 3) It is more sustainable than straw in the overall Carbon Footprint perspective
Its apparent drawbacks:
1) Cost 2) Cost 3) Did I mention its cost?

Just wanted to update this thread. Got my first flush from this Coir and I am FAR from impressed. Flush was very weak - I think its mainly due to the fact this isnt the fiber type Coir you find in pet store bricks. It is more of the husk. So my verdict: no good.
