What I like so far is the water "problem". By that I mean usually we are fighting to keep our substrates hydrated - with Coir, or at least this brand of it, moisture retention is quite good. Until now I exclusively used pasteurized straw as my substrate and it was always an uphill battle to keep that stuff properly hydrated. With straw there are two main problems:

1) To much moisture leads to really slow colonization time and enhanced mold growth
2) Not enough moisture leads to drastically reduced yields

I think Coir might be my choice for future substrates simply because
1) It is far more compact in its dry state than straw
2) It makes far less a mess of my place!
3) It is more sustainable than straw in the overall Carbon Footprint perspective

Its apparent drawbacks:

1) Cost
2) Cost
3) Did I mention its cost?

Nice! I am hoping for a crop like that on my current batch of Coir!

Just wanted to update this thread. Got my first flush from this Coir and I am FAR from impressed. Flush was very weak - I think its mainly due to the fact this isnt the fiber type Coir you find in pet store bricks. It is more of the husk. So my verdict: no good.
