Straw in substrate

Today I was making up a bunch of pints of birdseed and ran short on the last one. Not wanting to only fill half a jar I started looking for stuff I could combine with the birdseed to fill the jar up. I decided on straw. So I boiled the straw for about 30 minutes to hydrate it then I drained for an hour and mixed in to my jar PC'ed and innoculated. Anyone ever do this before? If so what kind of results did you get? I put in about 1/3 straw 2/3 birdseed.

Hey buddy,
I have used straw and got great results, but i always spawned it with BRF or birdseed. I think it will work just fine.
best of luck

Are you going to use those jars to case or bulk spawn? If casing, you should be fine. If using as spawn, it might be a bit hard to spread your innoculation points with that straw jar. Let us know what happens.

Well I have a bunch of birdseed jars that I was planning on spawning to straw for a bulk tek, hence the reason I had a bunch of straw lying around. I don't know what I'll do with this jar if it turns out, I might try and use it as spawn, but I'll probably just case it. I'll post results once I get them.

Well three days after I innoculated that batch of birdseed in pint jars the one that was part straw is way ahead of all the others made up in the same batch and innoculated with the same B+ syringe. Most the jars only have one or two pea-sized spots of mycelium in them the one with the straw has 4 diffrent spots of mycelium all about the size of a quarter.
