For anyone looking to try linux as a desktop OS

Mandrake 9 (dolphin) has just about got linux to where it needs to be to make it as a desktop OS. Ive just started using it, i often try out a couple distros ever few months or so to see how there comming along as far as ease of use, mandrake 9 is the best distro ive used to date, mixed with KDE 3, its ALMOST as easy to use and configure as windows. Except for the 2 day hastle i got from installing the latest nvidia graphics driver. Dependencys and headers are not something joe enduser should have to worry about just to play games.
I fully recomend giving mandrake 9 a try for anyone looking to "make a switch". Be sure to check if your hardware is compatible first though

Interesting. I've heard that Mandrake is easier to setup up but lots of folks tell me that Red Hat is a very good distro too. Red Hat (from what I've been told) is a little more "stronger" when it comes to its security settings, but any OS is only as good as its been configured so.....
Keep us posted.

Gentoo kicks ass. It is a great distro, but it takes a while to set up.

I dual-boot XP Pro and Redhat 8.0. I don't have much use for Redhat as I'm not serving these days (not to mention the GUI is like an 80yo with parkinsons), and mounting an NTFS partition is risky business unless you're doing read-only.

i find linux requires too much user configuration and doesn't take care of itself like windows does. also the amount of pirated software i have for windows is useless on a linux partition so that leaves me using it for webserving and uh irc and gaim. their freebie version of photoshop is nowhere near the quality and filters? good luck finding good ones for gimp. and i hear the generic Office they got is not too hot. as well as driver compatibility and querky little problems you have accessing windows networks.

Linux distros may very well require more configuration ... but as far as 'taking care of itself' ... linux is alot better than windows. Taking Care of Windows is the technological equivalent of a newborn baby with many feedings and changings and constant care. And lots of rest (reboots). I tend many linux servers that do extraordinary amounts of tasks, serving email and web, that only get rebooted once a year. Maybe once a year. We generally don't even mess with them except for running backups.
They have no GUI tho, I think that screws them up more than anything.

As far as linux "taking care of itself" I have been running one install that has gone through 3 computers for over 2 years with absolutely no signs of instability or slowdown. I would love to see windows do that. I also use openoffice and have found that it is much more stable and useable than office xp. The only reason I don't use linux all the time is that I can't play counter-strike (well i can it just doesn't run well). As soon as they make that work well I will say good bye to my windows partition. And btw NTFS freaking blows. I have spent many nights trying to fix broken NTFS partitions for friends because they become corrupted frequently.

The difference in user friendliness and functionality is very small if you compare the prices. How much is WinXP+Microsoft Office? And for those who use pirate software - I heard somewhere that windows collect and send info about licenses and etc.

im back on a sweetly configured gentoo box, i think im going to stop here though... no need to go back to windows, other then games, but most of the new games are being designed for both snes9x runs secret of evermore real well so i can reasonably assume other roms will work as well, sound is a bit off but i had the same problem with windows.
For the gentoo users who use KDE, how long did compileing X and KDE take and what are the specs on the system? Gentoo may take a long while to setup, but i really like the idea of the OS and all the software being compiled and optimized specificly for my system.
wish i could play ghost recon though =( i should prolly go ahead and try installing winex, according to the website it should work...
PS: Be sure to play glTron =) an amazingly great timekiller

I usually recomple only kernel. Startup is much faster if you remove stuff you don't need (like SCSI support) from it.

Windows is much better than linux for a desktop os. Unix is a server os, and to make it desktop is just stupid. And linux just plain sucks, its kernel is a joke. Install windows.

Linux was never meant to be only a server OS. I'm aware that it's not perfect, but the stuff majority of people need (OS, office, web browser, playing CD's, DVD's & MP3's) are at least as good as on windows if not better. All this stuff costs at least 1000$ for windows and 0$ for linux.

I don't know what you mean by that. I can at least see how linux kernel is made, while I have no idea what shit win32 kernel contains. And don't forget that many people still use DOS based win95, 98 & ME which are not a joke - they're a tragedy!

Install windows.
I'm using both, since I'm developing portable software, but there are not many reasons left for using windows.

i've just made the 'big' transition from Mac OS 9 to OS X (Jaguar). i can honestly say its the best OS i've ever used. it hasn't crashed or had any problem yet, classic seems to work fine.
any other OS X or OS 9 users here? OS X seems to me like the best introduction to Unix. You don't need to bother with it on OS X at all, but you can do. What are the UNIX peoples take on OS X?

Installing linux from a mainstream version, like Redhat or Mandrake is easy, just as easy as Windows XP imo. I dont know what yall are talking about though. Linux is just as good as windows for everyday computer tasks. The only things wrong with it imo, is theres no Photoshop, and any directX based games wont work unless you use wine. Which is a hastle in itself.
If your into security, or programming then you'll want Linux. Its all open-source, even the Kernel. 10 years ago linux might of been crappy as hell, but now, Id take it over windows any day.
