but I thought shrooms were only supossed to get light when you are ready for pining will exposre to light make a half cake start growing before I am ready

and is perlite in the bottom of an aquarium good for about 14 cakes?

Hey I randomly check on my cakes almost everday. I have some b+ cakes that have been colonizing while exposed to light since the very first day. I have yet to see pins and they are about 90% done. I dont think you should have any problems taking a peep at them once a day. Perlite is a great humidification method. I use it in conjunction with an aquarium bubbler inside a glass of water. Squeeze as many as possible in the thing. You might have to increase fanning a little bit but hey no biggie. Co2 build up could increase your chance of contams from what I hear. You might want to look into some kind of grid to keep your cakes off of the perlite though. I think they call it egg crate in the hardware stores. The more perlite exposed the more it can humidify your chamber...

small amounts of light every now and then won't hurt.

i assume you mean perlite in your fruiting chamber, not in the incubation chamber. to know whether perlite is right or not in the fruiting chamber, measure the humidity. do whatever it takes to make the humidity right.
