Thinking about buying a laptop .... suggestions
    #11778907 - 01/06/10 08:47 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I know absolutely NOTHING about laptops, but my wife is thinking about buying one.

I was looking at this one but couldn't figure out if it had a CD drive or internet capability.

i r dum :imslow:

Don't most laptops have CD drives though

Macbook's are awesome. You never get virus' and their quite fast. Also has some fun programs like garage band.

Macbooks are kinda expensive.

Whatever you do don't get a 32-bit system with Vista.  Takes forever to load Winblows.

they will all have a cd/dvd drive as long as you arent looking at netbooks. they will all have net connections.

apple machines will cost a little more up front but it evens out in the end (no yearly virus or spyware subscriptions fees, easier to have serviced, less maintenance, etc).

im a network admin. if someone asks me for advice on a new computer and i dont have the time or energy to be their IT support i tell them to buy a mac.. they are just a lot easier and more reliable.

i bought a mac 6 years ago. ive never done anything to it and it still works perfectly.

I paid 1400 for a new dell laptop in 2005, It was the biggest piece of shit ever. I knew 5 kids with the same comp when we went to college and they all broke within the first 3 years.  On mine, the mother board, keyboard, screen, hard drive, and graphics card all failed.

I bought a macbook after that (in 2008), for 999$ (student discount) and it came with a free ipod touch and a free printer. I sold the printer and the ipod and only ended up paying around 600 out of pocket for it.  I have had no issues with my mac computer.  The unix operating system of a mac is a must have for me.  If your really hung up on the cost of one, i suggest looking at running a linux OS, like ubuntu.

no...

niteowl, the one you are looking at does not have an optical drive.

you want to find something with a CDR/RW drive.

check out: www.newegg.com

buying from dealers directly is usually expensive.

Yea, like I said I have no idea WTF I'm looking for.

I may just go to a store and talk to a salesman face to face.

looking at it again, i guess you could call it that. dell's "official" netbook is the Mini but that inspiron he is looking at is pretty much identical to those...just a little bigger.

Going to check them out in person is a great idea, however like other posters have said i would ultimately buy it online so you get the best price.  Stores that sell computers ( like best buy) often jack prices through the roof.

Take the model number down and check neweeg.com and tigerdirect.com

Yea, that was my plan.

Talk to a salesman to see what I need then just buy it online :super:

newegg is 99% of the time the cheapest for computers.

monoprice is 100% of the time cheapest for cables, by at least 30%.  They are fucking phenominal.

Good things to know

If you want it for Portability, go with an Asus EEE PC, those netbooks have amazingly long battery life, it's great for taking notes and such during the day.

Of course if you need lots of power, a netbook is not a great idea.  But the newest models cost $500 and can play HD video...

Go with a mac for sure. Also, check ebay for deals, and if you buy the computer online you can avoid sales tax; if your state has one.
